This is pretty much always true though with electronics/gaming hardware/consumer tech in-general. Unless you have a weird situation like in 2020-2022 where you literally could not buy new GPUs or game consoles, apart from scalpers at a 100%-200% markup.
50-60% of current retail price is about the best case scenario when you are reselling something, especially if it's been opened and used and has signs of wear and tear and battery capacity is lost from lots of recharging. And honestly, at that point, it's hard to get more than 50%. A used Steam Deck is worth roughly half because that's just what happens with used electronics. If you buy a Playstation 5 today (let's say the new slim model), if you open it and use it for a few days, no one is ever going to pay $500 or even $400 for it, even though you just bought it. Same for Series X or a new 7800XT GPU.
I am frequently upgrading my PC hardware, smartphone, and consoles and usually sell the old one to offset the upgrade. I have tried often to get a higher % of the retail price when flipping electronics and it's extremely rare to get more than 60%.
If I am not able to sell my LED with anti-glare at a good price, I actually wouldn't mind keeping it for gaming on the go and just keep the OLED for in bed gaming since I bought the non-anti glare. I prefer that because I play in the dark and I prefer the punchy and true blacks which the anti glare does not provide--the blacks looks grayish.
LCD is not the same as LED.
You are comparing the price you paid for a Steam Deck LCD 512GB model to the new pricing for the Steam Deck LCD 256GB model. The Steam Deck LCD 512GB model is $449 while supplies last.
So no, in reality you didn't pay $479 for a $399 model, you paid $479 for what is now on sale for $449.
I purchased the 256 LCD, NOT the 512 LCD. Thanks for you input thou, from those that did buy the 512 LCD.
This is not sales trickery. I know it is unfortunate (and stings right now) as the consumer, but with the rapid pace of innovation that's how the hardware market works.
Apple does not let people know when a new iPhone will be released incase folks want to hold off and buy at a discount or buy the new model.
Yep - this is normal practice in marketing.
It's not fraud - It's murphys law.
You gamble every time you buy a piece of equipment.
This is why people need to take time to research and weigh consequences.
