They're probably referring to the stealth hardware refresh with the black cover. It's similar to the OLED's cover, but not the same.
I don't think it's possible to tell until you get it and open it up yourself.
This is correct. And yeah so far that seems to be what happens. Just a matter of luck of the draw.
So you know the LCD 256 model that's still being continuously offered has a totally updated heatsink and fan?
What is your source for that? And since when?
That's what I'm thinking. The launch day model's heatsink sucked. So if that was the case, it would not be something I would be interested in.
There was a sweet spot between the launch day model and the OLED, where they had the LCD with a revised heatsink and fan, which was much more thermal efficient, and the added bonus of not having to worry about burn in (with OLED).
