Unique L4 and R4 commands on 8Bitdo Ultimate 2C
EDIT: Official controller support has been added with the most recent stable release and grip buttons will show up if connected via bluetooth. This earlier post describes how you'd make the buttons work if connected with the dongle.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey, this is for anyone who wants to set up unique L4 and R4 commands on their controller.

With this controller, 8BitDo doesn't provide software to map the buttons. Instead, you bind them by holding down a combination of buttons:
Square button + button(s) you want activated + L4 or R4.

The interesting thing is you can assign multiple buttons at once. This opens up the possibility of unique commands by utilizing button chords.

L3: Left Stick Click
Extra Command: Button Chord with Interruptable Off. Set Chord Button to Right Stick Click. Let's say you want this to activate the Q key

R3: Right Stick Click
Extra Command: Button Chord with Interruptable Off. Set Chord button to Left Stick Click. Set the command as Q key.

On the controller, you would press: Square button + L3 + R3 + L4. That will map it so the button chord will now be activated when you press L4. Whenever you press L4, it will output Q key.

L4 can also be used as a mode shift activation key. If you want to mode shift the face buttons, set the mode shift button to L3. As for the button chord command, instead of Q key, you would use Cleared from Parent.

Now, pressing L4 will mode will activate a mode shift on face buttons.

Hope that helps and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Can we use L3 &R3(stick click buttons) as l4 and r4? I hate pressing those buttons, if this can do that I would be interested ig

Yes. If you press the Mapping Button (Square) + L3 (or any other button) + L4, it will copy the command for that button. Here is a video that shows this. Skip ahead to 3:34.

Other controllers can do this as well. Most have grip buttons instead of additional shoulder buttons. Some have additional software to map commands.

Wow, that's good to know, I am currently using a controller called Cosmicbyte Stellaris, it has back buttons but I can't assign ls and rs to it :(, good controller though
Can you assign L4/R4 so they act like brand new, unique imputs?

Or for example I'd like to assign L4 to act like Z key on keyboard - could be via steam

you can kind of do that except the controller has to be in direct input mode it's on the faq [support.8bitdo.com] on how to do that.
you'd have to do controller setup in steam, but steam doesn't really have support for extra buttons on 3rd party controllers so you can only bind L4 or R4 to share which will get you one more unique input
also make sure to undo mapping on whatever button you're gonna bind to share button

You won't actually see L4 as an option like you do with the Steam Deck, but it will function as its own input.

Z key would be placed as a button chord on L3 and R3. Then you could use select and start buttons for button chords for R4.

Once set up, when you press L4, it will output Z key. L3 and R3 will still work.

Just wanted to revise this with the new stable update that officially adds support on Steam Deck.

L4 and R5 will show up as bindable commands over bluetooth.

On your controller press the remap square button + L4. Then remap square button + R4. That will make it so whatever you bind for the back grips will work in game.

If you are connecting via the dongle, the grip buttons will not show up and you'll have to use the method I described above.

I just connected it with BT and the option does not show up...

If you had L4 or R4 mapped to something else, it may not show up initially. Press remap button + L4 and do the same for remap button + R4. This should work with the Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller connected via Bluetooth. I have yet to test the Ultimate 2C Bluetooth controller.
