Steam Deck

Steamdeck stuck at “downloading content 0%” forever
Normally when I go off wifi, I can run any game I want, despite not being connected to wifi, including if I swap SD cards, switch between desktop and gaming mode, etc…

But this weekend I’ve been connecting to a cellular hotspot a lot to fix other problems, and now whenever I try to play a game it gets stuck in the downloading content screen when trying to launch a game…
I’ve tried restarting, shutting down, going into offline mode, and even connecting to cellular again to see if it actually downloads anything! (It doesn’t) attempting to play a game in offline mode gives the error “downloads disabled”
What gives?

This happened to all steam games… but somehow I got the long dark to launch suddenly, but I’m not sure what I did to do it…? All other games are still doing it.

I believe I've found what I hope is a universal fix for this issue of Proton versions not installing, causing games to get stuck at Downloading Content 0%:

On the Deck, search for the failing Proton version (9.0 in my case). It'll have its own page in your library, like a game. On its page, go to Settings > Compatibility > Dropdown: Steam Linux Runtime 1.0 (scout) > Install from its library page

Thanks for this!

So FYI, you can't change the compatibility on the Beta channel. You have to switch back to the Stable channel and then follow the instructions above. You can switch back to Beta afterward and things will still work.

Another solution I've seen is to set the compatibility for each game you want to play (I did that for one game last night and it worked). However, people have been reporting that this move will delete local saves, so if any game you play doesn't have cloud saves, you need to back them up before you try this fix.

Personally, I prefer Bramph's solution.

So I'm a little steam deck illiterate here LOL. I found all the different versions of proton on my Steam account. Most of you are talking about 9.0. The most current one I saw on the deck itself was 6.3, and I tried to do the fix. Didn't do anything. I'm now installing 9.0, and going to do the fix as well.

Follow up. That seemed to work. Thanks all!!

Bro, thank you so much. Like SO much. I’m such a brainlet with this kind of stuff and all the fixes and guides and threads on this were causing me more stress than the issue itself. Thank you for your plain English and simple help.
