Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Waste of $450
After adequate research, I decided to buy a 64gb steam deck. After having it for a week and trying various games, I can’t help but to think that this product is nothing more than a misleading complicated headache. TF2 runs great, controls sucks. Can never get them decent. Dead island refuses to work and post suggest modifying game files or proton or whatever. I’m not doing that to make a game work that should. Fallout new Vegas just load’s indefinitely. This was supposed to be a plug in, download and play platform. Just a rant before I post this 2 week old game system on marketplace for $400.

In many cases, Steam Deck does require some patience and willingness to configure things to get an ideal experience. If that isn’t your thing, then I would agree that it’s not a good fit.

I would recommend trying some Deck verified games. The thing I don't like is that some games refuse to run on Linux. Also, certain games such as some older Ubisoft titles can take some work to get running on the Deck. I think I'm going to get an ROG Ally and see if I like it as much as a Steam Deck.

I have little patience and very little tech knowledge or ability, but I love my Steam Deck! I just stick to games that are at least playable, if not verified, and emulation. I guess not for everyone, but my preference is handheld gaming (I have gone from PSP to Vita to Steam Deck, while my "gaming console" has mostly sat). This is the pinnacle of handheld gaming!

yeah thats on you bud. not even valves or the decks fault if the developers of the game dont work on supporting it on the deck.

with all that you describe it seems like user error, not device faults if you cant even look into the device a little to get to know these things....

if you want to get better and deeper insights apart from valves own deck verified tab, go to protondb.com and check your game in question there, if thats too much for you youre definitly better off selling it.

You may want to give windows a try before selling it. Steam os is a terrible experience overall.

If you haven't tried EmuDeck yet, I would try that also. It makes emulating so much easier. I pre-ordered a ROG Ally, but I'm keeping my SD around for EmuDeck.

exactly this lol. it has is benefits, but it also has several downsides to it lol. for someone who said in his post that he cant be arsed with a little tinkering, putting windows on it which makes it into a tinkering device for everything is definitly not great advice lmao.

Even the RoG handheld is getting hit with a 'con' for being Windows.

Windows isn't a good handheld experience since it wasn't built for handheld.

There's no point in putting Windows on the SD, it just runs PC games a lot worse. Just buy the ROG is you want Windows.

This is false. Windows was built for handhelds since windows 8. Ten years ago, I had my first windows tablet and the experience on it was fantastic. Everyone disliked windows 8 with the start menu and the side bar, it was a dream on a tablet. "Windows wasn't built for handhelds" isn't even remotely true.

SteamOS will never reach the simplicity and ease of windows 10 / 11. In fact, the glorious "steam os" experience is worse than a windows 8 tablet experience from a decade ago.

Also false, I bought a steam deck for playing games, however steam os doesn't support most games I play. That's probably the most important reason.

The SD was designed around SteamOS. You can put Windows on the SD, but I would say just save up and buy an ROG Ally as it was designed around Windows and has better specs.
