Steam Deck
DON'T FORMAT YOUR SD CARD TWICE ON STEAMDECK OR IT WILL BRICK IT PERMANENTLY
Formatting ANY SD card on Steam Deck twice BRICKS the card permanently. Sometimes formatting a card once will brick it if it has any files on it and you abort the format.
There is nothing you do will fix it. You can't reformat it again on Windows or Steam Deck. It's toast.

This issue has nothing to do with fake cards. We have threads were people tested their cards using H2testw to check if it was fake before using it. H2testw will tell you if your cards fake or its breaking on you as it will show the errors. People have used H2testw proving the cards not faked and ended up with bricked cards after formatting twice on steam deck.

I hope valve takes this issue seriously as 500GB and 1TB cards cost a lot of money.

That's because you bought cheap fake SD cards that lie about the capacity they have. Stop spreading misinformation..
I had this happen today, I have a number of sandisk cards, formatted once on windows, add to SDeck, says 2GB (rather than 128GB) so I format it in SDeck..doesnt work any more. The others from the same supllier do work. The same cards have been used over and again on my laptop. I suppose a failure will occur occassionally. Maybe its just that. My 250GB cards are both OK pleased to say.
No problems to report after formatting my sd 10 times in a row.
No issues here with 3 hot swap cards + formatting. Just make sure they are inserted correctly.
I always format my card several times upon first use and I've not a single problem then or since. Sounds more like a problem between the couch and the deck.

As far as I'm concerned, people who post this kind of nonsense should have their posting privileges restricted.
Fake news... completely untrue
One thing you've gotta realize in cases like this is that, in the time from the original post to now, Valve's released about a dozen updates to jupiter-hwsupport (the package responsible for formatting SD cards).
Fake tip. I formatted mine 4 times before use. I did it to be sure.
Just putting my two cents in. The issue isn’t the steam deck. It’s the SD card. That’s not to say it’s a fake SD card. I purchased a Sandisk 1TB from bestbuy and I’m going through the exact same issue, but it’s not caused by formatting. It’s a fault with the card itself that happens every so often. I’ve had this happen with a PSP using a new 64GB sandisk sd and now my steam deck.

Sandisk has an end-of-life piece of code that’ll switch their microsd cards over into a read only format so you can recover your data before it’s completely spent. The issue is, sometimes the cards are created with a fault that’ll trigger that piece of code early. Formatting can speed up the process, but it’s pretty random and rare when you take into account just how many cards they sell.

RMA it and they’ll more than likely replace it.

PS: you’re not crazy, you just got a bad card. :p03:

It is possible to 'unbrick' sd cards, btw.

Dude... those SD cards you bought are fake.. It is nearly impossible to brick an SD card that way.

Someone got scammed

Maybe his deck has an issue
Maybe he should visit decktologist.
ye he may have dermatideck
It's not permanently bricked. Go to Desktop mode and open KDE Partition Manager. Delete the entire partition on the SD card and then format as EXT4
This is surely the Deck's fault...
