Regarding file sharing:
Last I checked Linux did have support for Windows file shares via Samba, so it should be possible to implement that. It could perhaps be used and tweaked to allow a better experience. Don't know how well it works since I don't really use Windows anymore, though, so it would hang on how well it works.
Alternative:
Another option is to integrate file transfers/file sharing in steam in some way. Like telling Steam that "this folder on this computer can be shared to other logins on my account", I guess there would be some security implications of this, so I don't know if it's actually a good idea. And even if it is, it's probably not going to be a short term solution.
Screen: in desktop mode you are running KDE. In its settings manager you can find power saving settings. I have observed that my screen goes dim after a while. There should also be an option to turn it off.
Data transfer: I just transferred my Amiga roms/kickstarts and games via a tool called Warpinator. Just make sure ports 22000 and 22001 are open on the PC side and run the app on both systems.

I think this is a great product. Its open, both in hardware and software. You decide what you run on it. Not some corporation. Example: a PS5 controller won't work on a PS4 system. Not because its technically impossible but because Sony wants people to buy the PS5. This controller works perfectly on Linux.
That's the difference between the Steam Deck and other handheld systems. The Steam Deck embraces open source. The consumers need to embrace it too.
EDIT:
From what I understand, Warpinator isn't available on Windows. A quick google search did find unofficial ports to Windows, but I cannot comment on how well they work. So it doesn't seem like an ideal solution currently to share files between the Steam Deck and a Windows machine.

And his video of him demonstrating it:

Even have a shortcut on the desktop for it when I need it.
pop open a windows CMD prompt.
cd C:\Whichever\directory\you\want
scp filename.txt user@ipaddress.of.deck:/directory/you/want/to/go
if you want to send everything in the dir:
scp * user@ipaddress.of.deck:/directory/you/want/to/go
And I agree the on-screen keyboard is terrible and incredibly unresponsive. But i just got a foldable bluetooth keyboard for whenever i need to type anything. Plus the keyboard i got also came with a case you can fold into a kickstand that fits the steam deck perfectly.
One other method for transferring files which should be a-lot faster is using an ethernet network adapter connected via USB. And now that i think about it, i do have one i bought for my laptop a while back. I'll probably give it a test run ans see how that works.
Also for accessing the Windows shares when I still had any Windows computer years ago I remember Dolphin file manager (available on KDE Plasma desktop in desktop mode) to have an option in Remote/Network section to show and directly manipulate the shared files in almost the same way you can use fish:// URL so do the same over SSH. There was also some option to Add Network Share. All was directly available in KDE apps to save/load and edit the files on shared places. I guess this options are still there i Dolphin and even improved during those years. Unless evil Microsoft again did something to prevent interoperability as they usually do :(
I use dual track pad typing and run into the "error" you are referring to all the time. However, it is not an error. The button views have deadspace between them. Keyboard itself sends haptic feedback and sound when the keyboard recognizes a press, whether or not it is actually over a button. Thus, this is user error. Could valve put 0 space between keys? Sure. But for some reason they don't. My guess is that it is due to the availability of different keyboards. They simply have to optimize it better.
