Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Streaming Issues, Cannot Connect to Computer and Second Monitor at Same Time
I'm trying to stream with my Steam Deck, a capture card, my laptop and another monitor (details below) and I cannot get the video from the Steam Deck to show up on OBS and my other monitor at the same time.

So here's the details: I have my Steam Deck plugged into a dock (JSAUX HB0603), and the single HDMI (it's not like the Valve brand dock that has two) goes into the "IN" slot on my Capture Card (Elgato HD60X), which connects via USB to my laptop. For streaming I'm using OBS, and after some fidling about I got the video to come through just fine on my laptop/OBS (the audio isn't coming through, but I'm 99% sure that's a problem I'm having with OBS, not the deck but I mention it in case it's somehow related). Now, here's the issue: I try to plug another HDMI cable into the "OUT" slot on my Capture Card, and the second monitor (I refer to it as a "second monitor" but it is a stand alone TV/Monitor that is not connected to my laptop in anyway other than through the Capture Card. It's what I normally play my Steam Deck on so it works just fine.) just shows a black screen. It's on, but black. OBS is still showing the video from the Deck just fine, but the monitor shows nothing. The Deck flicks on/off for a moment when I put the HDMI cable into the "OUT" slot on the Capture Card, so it seems that the Deck registers it, but can't cast the image to it for some reason.

Now, here's what I've already read/watched to no effect: I have seen threads/videos/comments where people seem to just plug in and play/stream, as I've described my setup, no problem. I've also seen many more explain that the Steam Deck simply cannot display to two screens. I've seen videos showing you to go to desktop mode on the Deck and change the display options to cast to two screens (I have tried this, no effect other than the screen stays on on the Deck AND OBS at the same time, but still wont cast to my other monitor). I found one stating that the only way to make this work is with the Valve brand Dock that apprently has two HDMI outputs, but I'd rather not drop $80 on a new Dock when my JSAUX works just fine in every other regard. I've thought about buying an HDMI splitter, but several threads I've seen here claim that wouldn't work, but since I don't care that it's the same image going to my Laptop and the Second Monitor, I don't see why it wouldn't work?

So, I call upon the wisdom of the forums. Do I need to just suck it up and buy the Valve brand dock? Will an HDMI splitter solve my problems? Am I missing something obvious? Am I an unlucky idiot and it's a random stroke of bad luck? Let me know what you guys think. I can't be the only one having this exact issue, but it's starting to feel like it.
Lastly, the laptop I'm using is running Windows 10, and has had no other issues.
I've done my best to be detailed and descriptive here, but obviously please go ahead and for any more information that you need.

You do realize that HDMI is pretty designed to stop your use case. HDMI is encrypted with HDCP. Encryption without your permission is just ransomware. Yes, I am comparing HDMI to ransomware because the trade group is just ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Your TV is just choosing to show you a black screen. Physics isn't all or nothing, there should be static, but HDMI committee realize their ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game is up. To hide their ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ideas, they would rather choose to display a black screen so you blame the peripheral instead.

HDMI splitter works because it decrypts HDCP signals.

Here is a working HDCP signal decryption that probably works because warner brothers sue them.

If you think $200 is expensive, then you know the actual cost of political ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

I am rooting for displayport and GPMI

Oof. Dang. Well thank you for the info. However, I have still seen videos of people streaming with Steam Decks and the exact same capture card I have, and running OBS, so it seems possible...I suppose they could be using a splitter like the one you linked to, but I find it odd that this isn't mentioned anywhere. I have heard that the Valve brand Steam Dock has two outputs for this, and that this solves the issue, but I only found one thread somewhere on Reddit that claims this.
Like you say, if Warner Brothers took the time to sue them, then that almost certainly means the HDFury splitter works, but it'd suck to have to spend $200 just for a splitter that actually works. $80 for a Valve-brand Steam Dock would be better, but I still only saw one thread claiming it works. Maybe this is the wak-up call I need to just start building a passable gaming PC lol I love my Deck and would like to Stream from it while using my computer to Run OBS and monitor Chat...but it's seeming like that might not be as possible as I thought.

My advice is test and return.

HDMI is becoming more painful because that mafia has a fantasy that consumers will never need debugging tools. No, power management will need a community of individuals who give a crap. Shipping a blob will never cut it. Expect ♥♥♥♥ quality software in the future.

So no, I do not blame your experience. Your experience is quite common. Yes, this trade group made your life miserable.

I am not sure about that. The dock implements two outputs with displayport MST. Those HDMI TV vendors will probably find a way to make our lives even more miserable.... We are in dark times in terms of tech freedom. HDMI is a supply chain attack and we are victims of their political bs.

Hmm, well, thank you for the help. I was considering getting the proper Valve Dock anyways...maybe I'll just bite the bullet and buy it and hope it works lol
