Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Steam Deck worth it or wait for 2?
I got the Gamesir 8+ with a tablet so that I can use Steam Link with my computer. While I like it I am still looking for a Deck for traveling. The problem that I might have is that when I buy the Deck, within some time the Steam Deck 2 might come out which I could buy instead of the 1.

I am asking if it is still worth in 2025 to buy the Deck or just use Link for the time being till the Deck 2 comes.:spiffo:

Yes. Unless you are financially challenged, there is no need to wait for something we have no idea when or if it will come. As for streaming:

Thanks for the response! 600 euro is something that I could use for the quest pro, or upgrade my pc.

The Deck looks awesome but I don't want to have the same issue I had with the quest 1 which now is mostly obsolete.
There are 18,159 games currently verified or playable on the current generation steam Deck. Even if a Steam Deck 2 came out you won't have to worry about running out of games

That is just how technology works. If you don't want to buy something that will go obsolete, just never buy any tech. Valve has stated that they will not be doing constant refreshes. No one will know when a Steam Deck 2 will appear, so you could be waiting 2 more years for a Steam Deck where as that's 2 years could be enjoying a current Deck.

As I mentioned, there is lag evolved using a tablet with a gamepad so the experience is not the same. Take a look at the other current offerings as well (ROG Ally, Legion Go, etc). Many different products out there today to consider.

Thanks. I purchased it today!

I also saw that you can still use it with link if you want to really play certain games.

thanks for response. I bought the 512 gb Oled one and hope to play years with it!

Games I play like: Project Zomboid, KAG, etc. don't demand much which is nice.
If I see new games than I could use Link with my pc.

I am also developing Indie games which I like to play on the go and test how it works.

I have 400'ish hours in Madden Football '25. All that has been played on my Deck through streaming from my PC as EA's Anti-Cheat doesn't work on Linux. I used to play the older Maddens on my tablet via Steam Link before the Deck came out. Even streaming through the Deck, the delay between the controls and the tablet no longer exist so the experience is better than my tablet. This also opens up more games that are usable via streaming.

Love to see more developers owning Steam Decks!

That's why I wanted one. I had some issues with games through Android and Google Play is a hassle. Rather just have all my pc games with me than to buy some crappy alternatives.
If you are okay with paying 600.00 for obsolete tech, than sure. You have options now within the same price range that you should consider.

i looked at all my options, as a poor man. I found the steam deck oled to be the best value for the money. windows is garbage, especially on handhelds like the rog ally.

linux prebuilt PC's cost about the same but they arent focused on gaming, so the integrated graphics arent as powerful as the deck.

building a pc from scratch is a massive headache for me, im done with that.

the deck has a custom built APU, couple that with the fantastic battery life, ease of repairability, hardware and software support from Valve, even if the hardware is obsolete by your standards the deck is far better than the competitors.

I havent even mentioned how the software is focused on user privacy and playing games.

nothing else.

no LLM AI garbage, ads are basically nonexistent, no invasive social media or algorithmic BS, just a platform to launch your fricking games.

valve wins hands down in my book

Wont be a Steam Deck 2 until 2027 or 2028 at least.. So Plenty of time for Steam Deck 1

Rumours have been circulating about a console or standalone VR device coming out later this year, so if you're not in a rush, it might be worth waiting a few months to see what they have actually been working on. But I very much doubt it will be a Steam Deck 2.
But perhaps if it is a console, it might be compact and easy to travel with.

Definitely should have invested the money in that instead of the steam deck. You purchased highly obsolet tech. It's great for playing pokemon or games from 10 years ago, but anything recent will run poorly on this device. I hope you dialed your expectations in accordingly.

I hope you are aware that steam doesn't even remotely care about your privacy. All steam cares about is making as much profit as possible, it's a businnes. Games which collect data don't suddenly stop that because you're on steamos...

No. You can't launch games in offline mode sometimes and it always updates. It's a DRM machine. 0/10
