Steam Deck
Why is everyone ignoring the Steam Deck USB port?
The steam deck has a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port. This thing is blazing FAST, yet everyone is just talking about getting a microSD card to expand storage.

That USB port can take a USB NVME drive or you can just use a USB 3.2 stick, or even a portable SSD drive.

But everyone is just talking about using the slower Micro SD for expansion.

What am I missing?

A USB 3.2 Gen 2 has a max speed around 1,200mb/s.

It's not fun to have a cable hanging from the handheld device and then having it go to some drive in your pocket, which apparently will make your pocket hot if those drives do get hot, so not even comfortable.
get a small pocket drive as big as your hand, get a 3 inch usb cable
tape drive to back of deck use 3 inch cable to connect to deck

Cable fine but a drive or enclosure can get pretty hot. You'd need heat resistant tape if you expect it to stay attached and the glue not to weaken.

I have a m.2 SSD in an enclosure. Not a Nvme, moving stuff onto it can get pretty damn hot. I wouldn't want something like that taped to the deck. Besides the heat on the deck, whereever I store it when not in use I'd be concerned whatever tape I used to secure it would end up failing and it'd fall off

true forgot about heat, rubber band maybe?

Maybe but again not sure how long it'd last.

Ok me copying upto 500gig onto the m.2 SSD all in one go likely causes more heat than playing a game and only accessing part of it. Considering some may choose to use a NVme drive though that heat may balance out. Don't have a Nvme Enclosure or free drive or I'd test it myself.

Suppose the best option would just be to ensure you get something that is meant to withstand heat. Still have the cable to deal with and I'd want it secure so that nothing can snag it. Last thing I'd want would be to catch it putting the deck away, bag, or taking it out. Especially if it pulls the taped/banded enclosure away from the deck as it could fall if a user didn't realise.

u can get 1 of those 1-3 inch usb cables so its not very long, saw some at 5 below
can use camera bag lying around (much bigger anyways)
true forgot about heat maybe usb fan? (get usb hub for more ports)
not too much weight
dock mode is for a desk then u dont need to strap the drive to the deck

Or maybe just a USB angled adapter so no cable. Would depend on how well it'd fit .... Only seen Gen1 myself but sure there'd be Gen 2 if you look for them.

Maybe something like this to plug into the deck and just a small USB-C to whatever the Enclosure has? Enclsoure then secured to the back of the deck?

Yes I know this is a Gen 1 it was first I found that maybe workable.

Again for mobile use I think carrying the Deck, enclousure, bags and now a fan kinda ruins the portable aspect of the dock

well the dock wouldnt be used for mobile anyways, its used to make the deck act like a desktop pc
Carrying your entire Steam collection on a 5TB drive, playable anywhere, 512GB max nvme or 1TB max microsd doesn't even come close.

I'll take 5TB with all my games any day.

They should have gone with UHS-II support instead.
this is what i'm intending on doing the steamdeck as well. I'm currently doing it on my laptop and it doesnt impede the mobility at all. i've got the nvme enclosure velcroed to the lid, and a 1ft usb-c cable plugged into the laptop from the enclosure. effectively doubled my storage on my surfacebook 2 and the performance is great.
Just for the lulz, I checked how well the Deck might fare for spontaneous pub MP: I packed my Switch and 2 gamepads.
Not cool. Not cool at all. When it comes to mobile gaming, less is more.
Messaggio originale di Crazy Tiger:
Carrying a drive with you goes a tad against the mobility part of the Steam Deck.
You can buy an expensive 2 terabyte usb flash drive stick and so the steam deck will be mobile just with a flash drive sticking out, right?
I think buying a drive for that might be even more redundant if opening it up and replacing the drive is simple enough.

I get what you mean though, it's a non intrusive surefire way to add potentially fast storage to the device with pretty much no risk. I personally would rather open it up provided it's not a complete mess in there.

What kind of backwards logic is this

It's trolling. Just ignore the troll and his bait.
