Xinput
I'm sure this has been discussed.
If a game says it has controller support there's no reason it shouldn't work on deck. Add xinput support.

I mean, there are plenty of reasons a game won't work on the Deck that have literally nothing to do with the controller. Controller support is just one tiny piece of the puzzle.

The Deck already got XInput support. It passes XInput to games, it also accepts XInput from external controllers.

You could go an easier route & map gamepad actions to KBM actions (which the game most certainly understands) through Steam. There's presets, i.e. for games controlled with WASD & mouse which you can apply and then modify as needed.

From my understadning there's Xinput support, but I don't know if it's native through the Distro itself, or if it's handled through Steam Input.

Has anyone just installed a native Linux non-steam game and got it to work without running steam? For that matter, what about DirectInput? My assumption is that flight sticks and such would work in Linux already.

Xbox Xinput and DirectInput aren't a thing on Linux, they are Windows specific.

I've been letting Steam handle gamepads for years just because it's easier than trying to set up xboxdrv.

I know they aren't a thing on Linux, but what happens when games run through proton? Does proton bridge a gap between my generic USB game controllers (which I can see functioning in SteamOS) and the game? I don't have anything in my library that is steam deck "playable", but also uses something like a flight stick. I guess I'll just see if one of those titles works enough to test input.
