SAM to lock achievements Steam Deck
Does anybody know how achievements work on the Steam Deck? When I lock achievements using SAM they stay locked on the computer version of steam, when I look at my profile on steam deck as well, but under the actual game on the steam deck the achievements still show. Then when I launch the game on the deck, all of the achievements I have previously unlocked pop at once. I did try going into desktop mode and getting SAM rewritten but I'm not too linux savy.

Steam Deck is a PC -- it shares the same achievements as every other PC you have used

You want to keep achievements from activating? I haven't used SAM in forever, but I remember you could delete (or re-lock) achievements. If you can't find a way to block while playing, then just lock them afterwards.

Edit: Oh, I think misread. You lock the cheevos and they reappear on steam deck. I gotcha now. Might have something to do with how your game handles game saves. Can you try locking achievements on another game and checking SD again?

So the achievements stayed locked for games I haven't played on the steam deck yet, however Persona 4 for example the achievements stay unlocked even after using sam. I'm wondering if they are somehow saved on the device itself? I almost want to try restoring to factory but I don't want to lose my emulated games lmao.

I'm thinking it might be a caching issue and using SAM while the deck is powered off might be a solution (Maybe not though).

I know the deck does some shenanigans around sleep mode. I opened a game I'd never played before last night, tweaked the settings, put it in sleep mode, and went to bed. I woke up this morning and woke the deck then exited the game. My play time for that game was at 10 hours and about a second later it ticked back to 2 minutes. So yeah, shenanigans.

Yep I just tried while powered off, and as well as logging completely out, neither worked for games that have already been played on the deck.

Thanks for clarifying! I'm one of the few that doesn't care about cloud saves as I'm considering the deck and my pc completely separately and this feels like it's related. Good info.

Like to know if SAM is safe to use, I like to reset achievements and re-do it

So I went the extra mile. I locked the achievements on the computer, then formatted the steam deck. That did the trick! Obviously not something you want to do all the time, but I'm assuming achievement or profile data is stored on the steam deck itself somewhere.

Yeah, for sure it's saved locally. It's so you can get achievements offline. I just thought if you locked an achievement, that info would save and overwrite old data from whatever device you're using. I don't 100% know how that works.

Anyway, before formatting, what I would've tried is: delete save files > lock achievements > launch game on pc > create new save and close > then try steam dock. For some one in the future to try.

It's usually safe, just not in online mp games. Should be possible to delete achievements of online games, just not while playing. I'd double check from different sources if I were you before trying.

You can reset your achievements in the Steam Deck itself using the Steam Console:
1. Go into Desktop Mode
2. Open Konsole
3. Enter "steam steam://open/console"
4. From within the Steam console type in "reset_all_stats {appId}", where {appId} is the game's unique identifier in Steam. You can get this by opening the game's Steam Store page in a web browser - the URL will look like (the {steampoweredURL} part is just the actual steampowered dot com website - I'm just replacing it so the URL isn't made into a widget)

{steampoweredURL}/app/{appId}/{appName}/

For example, the URL to CS:GO's Store page is:

{steampoweredURL}/app/730/CounterStrike_Global_Offensive/, so its appId is 730

The command to reset CS:GO's achievements would be "reset_all_stats 730"
