Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Reason you bought a Steam Deck
We all got our reasons. I bought mine cause I'm away from home 2/3 of the year where my gaming rig is. I got fed up with Nintendo being strict about their Switch console and my iMac is awful when it comes to playing games on Parrells so I wanted something else.

Also, I want a device to force me into Linux.

In no particular order:
  • Gaming away from my desktop (in bed, on sofa, in garden, away from home etc)
  • Exposure to Linux
  • Addicted to tech
  • Backup PC
  • Support the concept of SteamOS
  • Gives me an excuse to buy way too many silly accessories (cables, bags, docks, sd cards). Don't judge me! :D
  • edit: Price. A very reasonable price point was a big factor. If this was $1k I'd probably have passed.

I like handhelds, I've had handhelds for almost as long as I've had PCs. But I strongly dislike modern consoles just being walled garden restrictive PCs. The Nintendo Switch is in effect an Android tablet with a proprietary OS and Nintendo artificially prevents you from running Android on it even though it 100% could, with great compatibility even. And since the OS on it is so bad and half-baked, you can't even use it to browse the web and use streaming services or whatever. I dislike this out of principle, and of course I also like being able to use my devices how I want and not how corporations dictate I can

I was a fan of GPD Win handhelds and the Steam Deck is another great device, though not as portable as the NDS-sized GPD Wins. It's great I can still take the Win with me and play less demanding titles on it while it's only as big as a smartphone, and I also love the Deck for its power and input options such as trackpads and gyro

To play my Steam library...

On the sofa.
On the toilet.
In bed.
At the dinner table.
On the front patio.
While spinning in a chair until I get sick.
At the in-laws to avoid having to talk to anybody.
While in the general vicinity of the wife so I can pretend we're having quality time.
In the car. (While parked, of course.)
At the office softball game.
While camping.
While sitting in my Air BnB away on a training event.
In the local Starbucks while sipping on an Americano.
In front of my actual desktop PC because "Why not?"
During slow days at work.

That's probably about it.

It'd be awesome to get it working before the deck arrives. that'd be sweet.

Because I have so many games I want to play and I don't want to be sitting around all the time. I want to be in bed all the time.

The mobilty aspect is what makes it attractive to people with health issues. No need to be tied to a chair in front of your PC.

For me its as simple as being able to play my Steam library while in bed or on the couch. Its perfect for those days when my nerve endings decide my spinal cord owes them some money and they collect by liquidating my nervous system Fat Tony style.

Steam Deck will be a life saver for many in similar positions; it gives you a bit of freedom.

Potential tournament setup and new target hardware for dev stuff.

I reserved it so I can eventually play my multitude of Steam and GOG games that I haven't touched yet...all the times and places where I don't want to use my gaming, "portable" laptop. Others have accurately captured most of the wheres and whens.

However, I have also been teleworking for over 2 years and I just recently went back in to the office, mostly full time. I have found that when I get home, I don't really feel much like booting up my laptop because I don't have as much time in the spots where I would normally use it. I am usually getting home, doing stuff around the house, having supper, and then settling in to the bedroom to relax and watch TV with the wife.

So now, the Steam Deck is looking much more appealing.

And I should have my OneXPlayer Mini within days so I can start messing around with that while I wait another 9 months or maybe much more for my Steam Deck to arrive.

Mostly because i travel a lot because of my work and as a Linux user, this device talk to me. I've been using Linux for years and i just don't want to deal with Windows.

But i'm very surprised by the fact that even home, i kinda enjoy more gaming on it than a regular PC.

I bought one so I can sell it and buy a great GPU for $400

I thought that the Deck would be the best portable gaming platform out there, and the bang for buck value is extremely good.
