Steam Deck

Steam Deck

steam deck: left buttons are unresponsive, soft beeping noise
So for starters, just recently received my Deck on April 14.

I'm not sure what happened, but last night my Steam Deck started making a beeping noise that repeats every couple of seconds, along with the haptics rumbing. Also, most of the buttons on the left side of my deck (d-pad, left analog, the steam buttons, the 'select button, and the two buttons on the back) are for the most part unresponsive. The only thing I remember doing before this issue occured is I did use a different USB-C cable to plug into the deck while I was in bed, and I updated to the beta version of Steam shortly before the issue started. I've been taking good care of it, it hasn't been dropped or damaged in any way.

I'm not sure what to do, so looking to see if anyone has had/knows anyone who has had a similar issue? Any idea what the issue might be before I have to look into RMAing it, which I really don't want to do.

Thanks!

If you opt into the OS Channel Beta (available in the Settings -> System -> OS Update Channel option), there is a new Beta OS release which should remedy this issue. You'll need to stay in the Beta OS channel until this makes its way to the Stable update.

Please let me know if you continue to see any issues after switching into this update.

Thanks for your help and patience.

The exact same thing happened to me earlier this month.
I had to send mine in.

there have been a few reports like this and most ended in an RMA request

...but there was one where the user figured out that the Deck changes its behaviour after plugging in/out a P2 headphone and an SD card

the thread ended with the Deck's erratic behaviour stopping on its own after a few plug/unplug tests and such

It's the beta BIOS imo. It causes track pad issues. Try this: fiddle about with the left track pad for about 10secs. The beeping should stop. Keep your finger onthe track pad and try using your left dpad and left thumb stick. They should work again. Finally release contact from the left track pad. The beeping will return and your left controls become unresponsive again.

I believe the issue is the beta bios. Unfortunatly there's no way to downgrade the bios back to the stable version. Your only recourse is to request an rma swap via support.

everything you just said worked as you said. my d-pad and left analog, along with all my other buttons on the left side, worked with my finger on the trackpad, and the beeping stopped as well.

that's upsetting. but i appreciate your response so much, thank you for replying.

Unfortunately i am stuck with the exact same problem. I really dont want to send the deck in since im from europe, it will probably take more than a month to ship back and forth. As i understand there are no fixes for this at the moment. The steam support asked me to send it in too.

same issue here.

Started today out of the blue (didn't have anything plugged in or out). Left side is not responsive (and if responsive then very broken / glitchy) and constant beeping.

just reinstalled SteamOS and issue is still there.

Probably gonna try to Re-image SteamOS next - which is a bummer though, since I spend a lot of time to install non-steam games and configure the right proton setups and savegame syncs ... But everything will gonna get wiped anyways when send into RMA :|

Hello, I experience the same problem. Constant beeping and unresponsive / laggy controller, although the touch screen works fine. Waiting for the info from Steam support.

quick follow-up to my previous post: did Re-image SteamOS and this also didn't work.
So I guess it is broken for real. Will contact Steam support regarding RMA then

Yeah, same problem. Did reinstall and re-image. Nothing worked. Now I'm wondering if a bios reset would help but don't know how to do that.

EDIT: Managed to reset BIOS, no change.

How did you manage to reset the BIOS? Also that sucks that you did that and nothing happened. :C

Shut the unit down, either from the OS or by holding power button for 10 seconds.

Check that the unit is off. Trackpads should have no haptic feedback.

While holding the volume- and “….” buttons, press the power button once.

Keep holding volume- and “….” during the power button press and a few seconds after that, then let go.

I am currently having the same issue. I reset steam os, reimaged the deck, and reset the bios. Nothing seems to fix it. I have sent a message to support.

It happened after I installed the update last night for me.
