Anything to keep in mind for first time set up?
The wifey just let me know that my steam deck arrived today. Is there anything I should keep in mind when setting it up for the first time?

I got the 64gb model, I got a little concerned about some posts saying to leave some space on the internal storage before going into desktop mode, otherwise there were a number of errors. I'll obviously be getting an SD card, but is there anything else I should keep in mind when setting up for the first time? And fwiw, my main use case will be various indies and roms I've dumped (n64, Wii u, and switch)

It went pretty standard and smooth for me although there have been issues posted here by some.

  • Put it on charge to top off the battery.
  • Keep it on charge while doing initial updates.
  • Once you're in, enable developer mode and switch off WIFI power saving if you are having connection/drop issues.
  • As you mention, keep yourself a healthy amount of free space so game updates and shader precaches don't fill it up.
  • There is a controller test function in there which is a good way to ensure all your buttons and sticks work.
  • You can install other versions of Proton (ProtonGE) which can help with compatibility with older games.

Most importantly. Enjoy! :D

research about AppImage, and then always try to get programs in that format, so you can place them in your sd or external drive: they may be heavier than usual versions, but they are useful to avoid having to use your local disk space. Use only the app store in desktop mode as last option: those apps can only be installed in your internal disk.

they also will run without installation or integrate them with your os.
