fair enough, I mean relatively easy, but a repair starting at $125 for something that is a common issue, is crazy. I watched the video, and id rather replace the button and the board to be safe, to hopefully prevent this from happening again since I have to do it myself.
I think the challenge is that I don't think those boards are available unless you find a damaged Deck that you can use for spare parts.
To me that's another issue. They sent the link and said if you are comfortable fixing it yourself. Cool, but the parts not available. So we have a known issue, with a high rate of failure, but no parts available, but still expect another 25% of the device at minimum. I'm usually very understanding, and I get how things work, but at the same time, it's a problem.
I'm not sure what else to tell you. Telling Valve their repair isn't worth the money isn't going to get you very far. I did warn that on the LCD model, the replacing a button switch is not as easy as it sounds (this has been made better on the OLED).
It is possible there is something else other than the button switch that's not working. There are reports of the plastic piece that pushes the button getting worn. That type of repair can be rigged a bit (someone did it with using a paper clip. However, you won't be able to diagnose anything without taking it apart to understand what specifically needs to get repaired.
I'm not saying it's not worth the money I'm saying it shouldn't even be a cost, the wearing down is more evidence, it's something that shouldn't happen. I've owned other system and I've never had a button "wear down"
How old is the device?
Buttons are considered consumables. They all break sooner or later.
Right around 2 years, but with less than 100 hours on it. It was packed away when I got it until I moved into my new place.
Sure within a certain amount of hours or presses, I can assure you, I'm not anywhere near that limit. Tires are consumable but still warrantied for so many miles.
Valve's hardware warranty is 1 year unless you live in a country which mandates greater. Whether you agree with this or not, that is their policy.

You can either sit there and stew around, or do something about it. If the device is beyond the warranty period, it is what it is and complaining isn't going to change anything.
Tires are more durable than buttons...
