L1 Button not working
My L1 Button is not working, I've done all the testing. It seems to be VERY COMMON, but i'm being refused a fix without paying roughly 25% of its value. Does anybody know where I can buy the Left Button board? Ifixit doesn't have it and Valve support doesn't seem to be very helpful with it. It looks easy enough to fix but annoying I even have to. I'm hoping this doesn't happen to the one i got as a gift, but I can't recommend them when a common issue isn't being fixed.

I wouldn't say "easy" to fix if you have the LCD and the button needs to be replaced:

fair enough, I mean relatively easy, but a repair starting at $125 for something that is a common issue, is crazy. I watched the video, and id rather replace the button and the board to be safe, to hopefully prevent this from happening again since I have to do it myself.

I think the challenge is that I don't think those boards are available unless you find a damaged Deck that you can use for spare parts.

To me that's another issue. They sent the link and said if you are comfortable fixing it yourself. Cool, but the parts not available. So we have a known issue, with a high rate of failure, but no parts available, but still expect another 25% of the device at minimum. I'm usually very understanding, and I get how things work, but at the same time, it's a problem.

FWIW, they are giving you an "estimated cost". It could be cheaper or it could be more. I would see if you have a small electronics repair shop locally. IIRC, Xbox bumper switches can be used but must be soldered in place. If you have a small electronics shop near by, high chance they have those Xbox switches there and can do the soldering (if that's what's broken).

$125 was the low end "it could be more" unfortunately where I live there's no reputable ones. I know switches work and are like 50 cents, but I don't know how to microsolder.

I'm not sure what else to tell you. Telling Valve their repair isn't worth the money isn't going to get you very far. I did warn that on the LCD model, the replacing a button switch is not as easy as it sounds (this has been made better on the OLED).

It is possible there is something else other than the button switch that's not working. There are reports of the plastic piece that pushes the button getting worn. That type of repair can be rigged a bit (someone did it with using a paper clip. However, you won't be able to diagnose anything without taking it apart to understand what specifically needs to get repaired.

It's not a fix, but a workaround: I'd map one of the back buttons to function as the L1. To make it more comfortable, a back button enhancement set from Skull & Co. is only $8.

I'm not saying it's not worth the money I'm saying it shouldn't even be a cost, the wearing down is more evidence, it's something that shouldn't happen. I've owned other system and I've never had a button "wear down"

How old is the device?

Buttons are considered consumables. They all break sooner or later.

Right around 2 years, but with less than 100 hours on it. It was packed away when I got it until I moved into my new place.

Sure within a certain amount of hours or presses, I can assure you, I'm not anywhere near that limit. Tires are consumable but still warrantied for so many miles.

Valve's hardware warranty is 1 year unless you live in a country which mandates greater. Whether you agree with this or not, that is their policy.

You can either sit there and stew around, or do something about it. If the device is beyond the warranty period, it is what it is and complaining isn't going to change anything.

Tires are more durable than buttons...
