Discord line breaks on Deck?

It's a random question I know lol, but my friend has a Deck and he was trying to figure out how to perform a line break on Discord. He said Shift + Enter doesn't work.

should work in desktop mode, no idea about game mode

I dunno which he's using. Also noticed a couple times when he's messaged me that mid-word there'd be some unicode squares lol. Not sure what he's hitting to cause that.
