Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Warning about update 3.6.19
I can see a couple of people having the same issue, so thought i wanted to warn people.

Have a LCD 512 GB model, updated it as soon as i found out 3.6.19 was released. Right after the update the deck would not start, just a black screen. I have seen it before, but a cold boot ( volume up + power button) used to fix this. Now i can try up to 6 times with a cold boot before something show on the screen. As soon as i either turn off the deck og make it go to sleep, the screen just is turned off.

Have tried to reset Bios, reinstall, even deleted all partitions before just in case it haf left something. Nothing works.

Steam support tried to point to these things that i could try, but practically told me to kick rocks and pay 200€ for them to try to fix it.

I really cant understand how they can update their own hardware, it breaks and then dont see they came with faulty software.

Can see other people have difficulty with it not booting, but it helps with a reimage or bios reset. Others have controller issues and other weird stuff. It does not seem like Valve care.

Hope you guys deck survived, mne didnt and have no option but to hope for a firmware update in a years time and just have to pack it up and forget it untill then. Im a bit frustrated about it i must admit. Not paying 200€ for them to fix what they broke.

Because it didn't update your hardware.

They didn't tell you to kick rocks.

They didn't break your software with an update.

How did they not break it? Honestly, i dont know. Because i did not do anything but update the deck and it broke. But ok, i dont know it there is something un the UELA that say its my fault if one of their update break the deck.

They will not help because its out of warranty, and yes they did not say kick rocks. I said they virtually said kick rocks. This is their answer:

Hi there,

Based on the amount of time that has passed since your original purchase and the nature of the issues you've described, we don't believe the problem is related to any fault of the device as it was delivered to you. For this reason, we will be unable to offer you complimentary repair or replacement.

As an alternative, we can offer you a paid repair service through our official partner. Based on the services that may be required, we estimate that your costs for repair would be EUR 200 plus applicable taxes. This price includes estimated shipping costs. Taxes will be based on your local rates.

Please note that this estimate is not a quote and your final price may change if the repair team finds additional issues or the problem is more severe than anticipated. This is also a best-effort service and there may be scenarios where your unit can not be repaired. In either case, you will have the option to have the unit returned to you unserviced and at no cost. Costs for most minor repairs are EUR 136, and costs for most major repairs are EUR 200 (before taxes). A final price would be quoted to you by the repair team after inspection of the device.

If you would like to proceed with this offer, please confirm that for us here.

If you feel confident performing your own repairs, some parts and service guides are alternatively available through iFixit.

Steam Support

I do not demand a new deck or anything, but if they at least said they would look in to a fix or anything, i would had taken that. my post was most of all a warning to people how think of updating. For some people this device is the only gaming device they can afford, so it would be devastating for them.

Experienced Grub Error when restarting steam after this latest update failed, tried reimaging with Recovery Image, but constantly getting an "update error" even after adjusting BIOS clock to match local time and UTC time, the BIOS seems to keep resetting/defaulting to UTC+0 time every time the update tries to install, but again, the "update error" keeps happening, even trying all the various "use WIFI 2.4ghz and hotspot" suggestions didn't work - very frustrating experience and reminds me of Windows BSOD/boot errors from the 90s - way too old to be wasting time troubleshooting bugs like this T_T

So now I've got a nice pretty 512GB OLED brick...

*EDIT* Got into "recovery mode" (three dots + power button), selected "Previous State B + Boot Menu", selected "Advanced options for SteamOS, and selected "fallback" variant of the two SteamOS to select from,

Booted into where the previous recovery installation left off, and for whatever reasons, this time, the installation and update process went through and finally brought up the sign-in steam page! Can't tell if Steam finally fixed the update itself or something on the server-side to allow the update to actually install properly...

Honestly, what a headache this has been, would really think twice before buying steam hardware in future,

Weird how no one else's Deck "broke". Even if you want to be a child & find 1 or 2 other people that might be having a similar issue, the vast majority of us are updated & running just fine. Valve didn't break ♥♥♥♥.
bs, i had similiar error but 4 or so months ago and i had to connect deck with hdmi wire to tv so screen would show up. Then i had to revert bios to older version using Bios manager for deck

Thank you so much. I have tried everything except the BIOS, doing it now. Will reporter back if that did the trick;)

Update:
Wow it seemed to do the trick. Had to disable steam updating the bios again. So I'm on the 121 version instead now. Thank you so much:)

I have to put my deck into offline mode and restart or games won't launch since the latest update.

Steam deck kids will always blame others when devices brick. You can even google this issue and it’s in the hundreds if not thousands by now. Just a word of advice, but do not under any circumstance update your steam deck if it’s working for you. It’s not worth it. I’m still on version 3.4.11 because I refuse to have my device brick over nothing.

you re*d, it's the "stable" version, nobody expects the deck to randomly get bricked by it. Your argument to poorly made updates is that it's fault of a users to decide to update it? Everyone who buys steam deck has the full right to get software updates and if for some reason after updating STABLE version something bad happens, it's entirely on the company. It's supposed to be a handheld pc gaming device which should take the least tinkering to work right out of the box. The least they could do is warn people before updating and put a safe fallback, you can't even fix this issue with just hdmi wire, you have to go ahead and install bios manager which is a software unrelated to valve. Something like this should be already set up in the deck!

The aggravating part is the Support asking 200 Euros for doing that.

Have Valve an Ombudsman? I think it's time to file a complain.

The "support" doesn't know anything and has to read a script and then they just say send it in. It's really sad how people bend over backwards for Valve and I feel like I will get jumped if I dare say that the Deck isn't perfect.

Being this the precise reason a complain should be filed to the ombudsman. Their support is scamming the customers

Google Steam Deck BIOS Manager and downgrade from F7A0131 to F7A0121. Try to hold on to power button for about 10 seconds until LED flashes, then wait a couple more seconds and try to turn it on. If it boots - go to Desktop Mode and use SD BIOS Manager. If not - try again. Took me five tries at worst to boot and nuke this cursed BIOS.

And yes, it's 100% this particular BIOS that does black screen on boot. I've tried to use it three times now, and 3/3 it just renders my Deck nearly unusable. Once I roll back it's like a miracle and Deck just works as it should.

edit: oh, I see you already rolled back and it's working. This BIOS should be banned from distributing.

Uh, I'm really not a fan of vALVE these days but I'm not so sure about your conclusions.

My deck was one of the first out and it's still working fine with both the latest OS and BIOS.

I'll answer any questions you have about it but really, I think there may be something else going on here.

I KNOW vALVE can't update anything without causing regressions or a whole new slew of issues. Sometimes both. My wife coined the phrase "vALVEs (♥♥♥♥)updates"...

But I think it might be beneficial to look in other directions.
