Steam Deck

Different models different performance?
My partner and I both have Steam Decks (non-OLED). Mine is older and heavier, theirs is newer and lighter. We have ensured we both have the exact same graphics settings in Baldur’s Gate 3, but my partner gets around 20 less fps on average. This seems to be consistent with other games we’ve played, like GTA Online (before it was borked ofc).

Did Valve undervolt the AMD chips on newer Deck models? Or is there something else we might be missing? We checked the Steam tweaks menu accessed with the (…) button too. All our settings are identical, including FSR.

Any difference in cpu or gpu heat? Might be the fan failing.

there was a hardware revision but there is no performance difference, except the oled is 5% faster due to stronger memory

It's impossible to get 20 FPS less on average unless you have a borked OS install or a defective SSD.

Even a OLED (2024) deck vs a release LCD (2022) deck is only about 3 FPS less in BG3; Both done with clean OS installs and full system wipes).

Some newer versions of the LCD deck have the newer improved cooling mechanism of the OLED deck. The OLED deck is slightly lighter than the regular LCD; may be due to weight changes either around the grips or the battery.

How do I check this? The performance overlay? I can take a look next time my partner and I are together.

Must be some defect. I know the hardware is supposed to be identical, that's why I brought this up. Idk why my partner's deck is so much slower.

Perhaps a defect then, idk.
