Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Thinking about getting a deck in the next 2 years
Is the deck worth it? Or are there other handhelds that do the same thing better. Also what are the decks specs and can it run non steam games aswell?

Define "better". In terms of price & battery run time, the Deck still is the goat. If you want something that delivers POWER above all else, a Deck competitor may indeed be a better choice.

The specs are on steamdeck.com and it can run non-Steam games.

IMHO totally worth it, had a desktop PC and a Switch before buying my Deck, haven't regretted a cent.

Highly subjective, but personally I'd say yes.

Define "do the same thing better". In general, it depends on what you want from the device, since there are other devices that do some things better and others worse but none that are a direct 1:1 upgrade.
Also what are the decks specs

Yes.

If your intention is looking at the Steam Deck 2 years from now then I'd say you should wait and reconsider this question at that time; along with considering what types of games you are expecting to be able to play. We're currently in the middle of current-gen AAA games moving away from cross-gen support to only supporting next-gen consoles, along with the advancements in UE5 and latest Unity LTS version. The level of AAA games coming out over the next two years may significantly alter the Steam Deck's value proposition for you.
An opinion now is worthless. Who knows what will be available in 2 years?

Hopefully there will be a steam deck 2 by then, from what I hear, the current on is decent enough, although it doesn't run some games because their anti-cheat doesn't like the OS of the Deck.

I'd keep my eye open on other handhelds 2 if I was you, there is a lot competition in the market, and who knows how the handheld market might evolve by then.

Well worth it. 1/3 play natively. 1/3 need control tweaking. And 1/3 don't run, period.
Lay in bed playing your steam library on your tv.

Is 1/3 good or bad?

Two years is a long time and games requirements are growing rapidly, so it really depends on what you want to play. Someone else (or maybe even Valve themselves) might have a better Deck by then.

If you really want a Deck and are able to do it, I'd say to get it as early as possible and then sell it when/if a new Deck is announced.

As far as games, very rarely have I had games not work after switching proton versions, and they were always obscure non-steam games with weirder than usual install processes. I still play tons of non-steam games and emulators though. There's the anti-cheat issue where some mainstream games won't load, some just won't connect to online servers but single player can be played, like DBFZ.

Also don't forget that the rating system isn't perfect, I play quite a few games that are marked as unsupported but they play just fine. In the end, I'd look up some comparison videos of the Deck and other handhelds but the Deck seemed to be the agreed upon safer option. Check out sites like ProtonDB as well to get an idea of what games work, what needs tinkering, or even flat out doesnt work.
