Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Windows 11 got corrupted AGAIN
Everytime I install Windows 11 at some point I will have a crash, either black screen or a ram issue blue screen and then I cannot boot on it again.
I can still recover the datas on the SD on another computer but cannot boot on my deck ever.
I just tried with a new high quality SD card of 512 gigas it lasted 3 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ days lol

I manage to install it fine, everything works fine, games, internet browser etc...

Meanwhile my 2 years old deck never have any issue under linux and SteamOS.
Is there anything I am doing wrong or something, I feel alone in the world with this.

At most it lasted 3.5 months with a cheap 128 gigas SD card.

There's multiple things it could be. Bad Windows update made it into the updated official ISO. The ISO itself could be corrupt. Could be a driver incompatibility. Could be an issue of some specific software causing a conflict. Could even just be a case of Windows being Windows.

Do you know what specific error code(s) you get when it BSODs?

No it is just a sudden crash or else it was a very fast error mentioning ram issue. Did not had time to read anything but catch the word ram.

Now you give me maybe a good hint, thank you for that, it may be the ISO that has an issue as I always use the same. I will recreate a new one.

Last time I did not install anything beside the web browser Brave and the usual game launchers so the ISO being the issue is probably the first thing to focus on.

Are you doing an f3 probe or H2testw on the microSD card before installing? Could very well be fake flash and eventually some system files get overwritten.

Also I’d suggest running it on the NVMe SSD rather than a microSD card. Or at least move the swap file / page file to the SSD to minimize wearing out the microSD card.

No, I never heard about that. I will check that.

Be aware those are data destructive processes so it will erase everything on the microSD when testing it. They work by writing a known repeating pattern of data to the SD card and then reading back that data to see if it’s correct.

H2testw is a windows program similar to f3 probe but it is a bit slower and does a full write to the entire reported space so it can take a while.

Since you noted having another SteamDeck you can also run the format of the microSD card in game mode and let it do the f3probe test. If you get an error saying to contact the vendor of the card then your card is likely fake.

I haven't yet installed again windows 11 on that card and I am using it in game mode for ordinary game experience on SteamOS. It did format and works well.
I will install windows 11 next week end and do all that you guys suggested.
Testing the card then make a new ISO.
Thanks for the help guys.
