Decided to Google it on day 3 since it didn't calm down.
I don't mind new electronic smell and that goes away quickly. This is such a peculiar and weird one, which is why I'm trying to figure out if it's normal or something off with the device.
Someone else reported the same and they got a new case which didn't smell that way. Leading me to believe this is not that normal smell people talk about.
Appreciate the reply. I guess it's just how it is then. Rog Ally here we go!
Thanks, that saved me from a lot of grief 😁
I can say with certainty that it does fade. It takes quite a while, but after some months it just has sort of a warm, plasticky smell instead of... I don't know what it is. Maybe some kind of solvent? A remnant from the manufacturing process I assume.
Also too many trolls on this board.
It used to be a lot worse. For about a year or so after the Deck's announcement there was a small but very vocal group of individuals who were deeply offended by the very existence of the Steam Deck. Across various social media outlets, Youtube, and these forums, they seemed to make it a personal mission of theirs to spread as much negativity about the Deck as possible and discourage others from buying one.
I used to wonder what the motive of some of these people was, and I can only speculate, but I had a few guesses.
- Kids who want a Deck, but for whatever reason they can't afford one, so now they just have a sour-grapes attitude towards it.
- Nintendo fans who believe that Nintendo has sole exclusive rights to handheld gaming systems. They become especially offended when you play Nintendo titles on the Steam Deck.
- People who took the "PC Master Race" elitism way too seriously and believe the only worthwhile way to play PC games is with a 4090 at 4k in front of a giant monitor with a mouse and keyboard. Anyone who believes otherwise is a "console peasant" and in need of ridicule.
- People with unreasonable expectations. They demand the world in a handheld device with no compromise, and they demand it at rock bottom prices. They don't seem to realize that reality and the limits of technology and physics prevents their wish from coming true.
For the rest, I think there are some people who just identify something that people seem to like, then enjoy pooping on that thing in front of it's fans to see if they can get a rise out of people. Look at the game forums of literally any new game that is anticipated, and you'll find them in droves.
