New SD + the case smells like chemicals. Does it go away quickly?
Heya!

I know everyone talks about the smells being great from the vent (meme or not...), but the one I just got smells like chemicals and it's not a good smell. I got chemical sensitivity and I can't wait months for it to subside. When it arrived the case smelled that way it, and it's still there too.

If I run the device in any demanding game, temp sits at about 80-82c and if I leave the room and come back it smells strongly in the entire room. Had the thing running on off for roughly 12 hours, 2 days straight. Still there. Really bummed as I really enjoy the device itself :/

Rog Ally smelled for an hour or so and then nothing.

Did your device fill that smell in the entire room while playing? Or was it just from the vents alone?

Would love to hear your experience!

Nah, haha. It really does smell.

Decided to Google it on day 3 since it didn't calm down.

I don't mind new electronic smell and that goes away quickly. This is such a peculiar and weird one, which is why I'm trying to figure out if it's normal or something off with the device.

Someone else reported the same and they got a new case which didn't smell that way. Leading me to believe this is not that normal smell people talk about.

Yeah, it’s a pretty strong smell. I just got mine maybe half an hour ago.

Appreciate the reply. I guess it's just how it is then. Rog Ally here we go! :praisesun:

That user hasn't owned a deck in over a year just FYI.

Sniffing the vents of your Deck to get a good whiff of that tangy chemical smell has become something of a meme.

I can say with certainty that it does fade. It takes quite a while, but after some months it just has sort of a warm, plasticky smell instead of... I don't know what it is. Maybe some kind of solvent? A remnant from the manufacturing process I assume.

Mine doesn't smell any more :-(

Also too many trolls on this board.

A lot of entitled children who get mommy to buy them a Deck, an Ally & all the expensive games they want has been my impression, which is why I don't comment a lot.

It used to be a lot worse. For about a year or so after the Deck's announcement there was a small but very vocal group of individuals who were deeply offended by the very existence of the Steam Deck. Across various social media outlets, Youtube, and these forums, they seemed to make it a personal mission of theirs to spread as much negativity about the Deck as possible and discourage others from buying one.

I used to wonder what the motive of some of these people was, and I can only speculate, but I had a few guesses.
  • Kids who want a Deck, but for whatever reason they can't afford one, so now they just have a sour-grapes attitude towards it.

  • Nintendo fans who believe that Nintendo has sole exclusive rights to handheld gaming systems. They become especially offended when you play Nintendo titles on the Steam Deck.

  • People who took the "PC Master Race" elitism way too seriously and believe the only worthwhile way to play PC games is with a 4090 at 4k in front of a giant monitor with a mouse and keyboard. Anyone who believes otherwise is a "console peasant" and in need of ridicule.

  • People with unreasonable expectations. They demand the world in a handheld device with no compromise, and they demand it at rock bottom prices. They don't seem to realize that reality and the limits of technology and physics prevents their wish from coming true.
For the rest, I think there are some people who just identify something that people seem to like, then enjoy pooping on that thing in front of it's fans to see if they can get a rise out of people. Look at the game forums of literally any new game that is anticipated, and you'll find them in droves.

What does that even mean? Literally everything in the universe is a chemical.
