Steam Deck Battery Draining Fast
Hi everybody. I’m having an issue with the steam deck battery. It is draining fast. The battery is 90 percent and it says 2 hours or 1 hour 40 minutes. It is draining fast with games that are not that demanding. Does anyone know how to fix this whether it’s in the bios or someplace else. This happened after I put a new ssd in my steam deck. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thank you and have a good night or day wherever you are. 🙂

What's your battery health at? Go into desktop mode and click the battery icon at the bottom right.

My Battery was at 90 percent when it said 2 hours now it’s a 70 with 1 hour and 40 minutes

It goes up and then it goes down and my battery health is 77 percent

Is that at the desktop? Otherwise that might be normal for some games.

Okay, we need to get more specific.

There is battery charge, which is the % until the battery cannot turn on.

Then there's battery health, which is the % of the batteries overall health until it's unusable.

I asked you for your battery health, and you told me the battery charge. Then I asked for your battery charge and then you told me your battery health.

These are two different things. Your battery health is 77% right? That indicates your battery has degraded from normal wear and tear and can't hold a charge like it used to. FWIW batteries usually die before they reach 0%. For example, many rechargeable batteries are dead by the time they hit 30%, so it's possible your Deck's battery is on it's way out.

What I want to know is: at max battery charge, what's the time remaining when playing an intense game? Then, what's the time remaining when sitting at the desktop?

The max time playing an intense game is around is 2 hours and 15 minutes with the fps at 40 and the tdp limit is at 8 watts. The time remaining when it’s at desktop is between 4 to five hours but it is still draining in desktop mode. I’m sorry for getting your question confused.

Welcome to steam deck no matter what you do and what you lower the battery will always be terrible. To the point where you need to be tethered to the wall defeating it’s purpose

Yeah that’s the one thing I really don’t like about the steam deck is the battery. Everything else I like about it. I wish it had battery life like the switch

May I please ask what model SSD you used as a replacement instead of the one that came with the device?

Apparently, the micron 2 TB from ifixit is $185 + tax + shipping.

Ah thank you. I'd assume that it has more power draw than the default component. Not sure if it is significant enough to be linked to OP's on battery problem though, but just my thought.

It wouldn't make any noticeable difference.

The most likely scenario is that the OP has anxiety from opening up and modifying his Deck, and is now paying extra attention to his battery life, which isn't providing the same charge as it used to, because it's lost about 25% of it's life.

To give you a reference, my LCD Steam Deck from launch has 97% battery health when I sold it a few months ago. Batteries at 80% or less are definitely on their way out.
