Enable Wake on LAN for Steam Deck
Hi guys,
Recently I'm looking for a way to enable WoL on my Steam Deck when I put it onto its dock.
I would like activate remote play from my iphone when I'm away in order to play on my steam deck remotely but I'm not able to wake it.

any idea?

Probably will not be possible because the hardware may not support it at all. Wake on Lan requires integration across the whole stack.

May I ask you define away?

As long as the network card on the deck has this feature someone at some point (or Valve themselves) will do it.

However, as it will probably come at the cost of battery charge I would rather keep it disabled.

I asked for this around six months ago….

Like me, don’t expect an answer any time soon..

It's a complicated feature. This feature will take years. If the device wasn't design on the start with this feature in mind, there not much chance for the manufacturer to backport it.

Wake-on-LAN can be a difficult technology to implement because it requires appropriate BIOS/UEFI, network card and, sometimes, operating system and router support to function reliably. In some cases, hardware may wake from one low-power state but not from others. This means that due to hardware issues the computer may be wakeable from its soft off state (S5) but doesn't wake from sleep or hibernation or vice versa.

Starting with Windows Vista, the operating system logs all wake sources in the System event log. The Event Viewer and the powercfg.exe /lastwake command can retrieve them.[14]

The wikipedia page for this feature is quite long.

It works if the steam deck is in standby in an Ethernet dock, it’s not full wol but kinda ok. Be sure to switch the the Ethernet network before putting it in standby.

take the steam deck with you, why would you play on an iphone?

steam deck is not a replacement for a desktop computer.
Because I would like play with my steam deck when I'm in places and circumstances where I cannot use Deck. Of course, I could use my PC but steam deck consumes less energy then my pc.

Oh, thank you, I'll try it

How is it difficult when iI can do it on my phone with ease? I can even power off my PC. The YouTuber Chinballs Gaming made his wake on LAN plugin available on GitHub. Steam could have easily implemented this feature with ease.

Can't imagine "waking" the device not just acting the same and connecting to an external display the same

This is a feature I would really really love to have. I own several Apple TVs throughout my home each with steam link installed and my Steam Deck sits in a dock connected to Ethernet. I would love to be able to launch Steam Link and wake my Deck remotely so that I didn’t have to manually start it up each time. If you’re listening Valve and you’re thinking about Steam Machines again, a focus on high quality lan streaming and WoL would be in my top pick of features. It puts a console in every room instantly and I love it! PS still have my OG Steam Link hardware.

Moonlight actually does this quite well. It actually let's you stream your entire PC in general rather than just the Steam app. Try it.
