Pro tip: don't regard the current slice of history, regard all of it. Windows has had such a function already, including cloud sync. Both cloud sync and the function itself were optional, turn-off-able. Windows still has a clipboard history, including cloud sync. Which is optional.

In the face of this history, what makes you think this one won't be optional?

I will observe how this will unfold from the safety of my Linux machines.

Even if they leave the possibility to disable the functionality I don't trust that it will actually be completely disabled. I will stick with Windows 10 and Linux on my devices.

Looks good, finally something worth having

I think it won’t be trully optional due to the aformentioned history.

We are talking about Windows.
In the face of history, go ahead and disable telemetry on the system.
Take your time, I will wait.

Microsoft need to understand that if people could choose any Windows OS I am willing to bet people would either use XP or 7, can't they just stop adding bloatware and ads that 99% of people won't ever use :er_sad:, Still I am on team Linux since the Deck launched, so GJ MIcrosoft keep getting away from the concept of PC chasing who knows what vision while pissing off all your current userbase

Also if I ever have the displeasure to have to use Windows 11 with Copilot my one and only interaction I will have with it is to ask it to delete System32 and see what happens

in the face of history? the business model of microsoft is to exploit ignorance of users, and use it against them. they have tried multiple times to sabotage adoption of linux because their business became selling data from users, and influencing other companies and orgs through their os.

"optional", related to software "features", means "opt-in". when a program is "pre-included", without asking users, is usually called "bloatware".

they need to sell the idea that "its great", because if they tried to do it "stealthily", when a hacker or whistle-blower announced they find that bs (which inevitably would happen sooner or later), would be very expensive for them.

when was the last time you were able to easily uninstall windows "bloatware"? lets say, cortana. or maybe the file explorer and replace it with a better one, or remove any of their internet browsers without affecting the os?

microsoft never adds "features" for data mining to be "optional" or easily removable, and thats also why they try to trick new users into making a microsoft account asap.

is a bit like the mobile phones adopting designs that dont allow to easily replace or remove their batteries: to mine as much data as possible, is better to force "users" to accept and believe its an improvement, or that to keep the size small and cheap, is easier to make them that way.

to properly disable telemetry in windows, you need to manipulate the registry, and remove many other inter-related things like explorer, which is not only hard, but cripples the system. Thats one of the main reasons the "windows ameliorated" project started: to make the process as easy as possible, and also make the system stable enough to be usable (even if it cannot longer be considered "secure", because if you leave some things inside the os, it will reinstall all the bs)

The main reason they hate "windows ameliorated" isnt about "ip infringement", but because it shows not only how bloated is the os, but that it could be a lot better if they officially offered it without all their pre-included bs, and was actually "optional" (opt-in, ie, when you need to get it by choice).

making bs hard to remove, and not optional, is not a flaw, its a feature of what they actually sell (which also relates to "people" promoting the use of "social credit score" systems).

why people should worry, you just have spyware installed on your OS by default and every random person who is able to gain access to your PC is able to ask Copilot a bunch of fun questions like everything you did in the last 3 months with screenshots every 3 seconds, I really can't think how this would be unsafe

"spy"ware is encoded into almost everything... Unless you write code, draw schematics for electrical circuit boards or processors, then you have very little rights to complain about it. It's there, it's the law since 2001... most the people are low level grunts who don't care what you are doing, unless you are flagged for something really bad.

Touch grass, talk to your bank about an offline account. Ask for biometric banking. Don't use social media.... get a life. A real life.

nice logic, everything tries to get your info so why not let an AI with OCR spy on you for 3 months straight with the only cope reason for being there is to help scatterbrains while at the same time opening countless vectors of attack :steammocking:
also I am running Linux, so I could care less not my problem but I fear for all the less tech-savvy people out there, imagine a tech support scam that uses screensharing to steal data, now they just need to ask Copilot and they can check on everything you did on the last 3 months

proper logic = nice logic

lets see if you get this:
if a psycho or sociopath is someone that can put safety, goodwill towards others and so on, in second, third or further below place, which would be the "best business model" for someone like that:

A - to deal with problems as they come while investing time and resources in research to improve products and services, and respecting "end users", or

B - create the problems before they happen, not as simulations but in "live scenarios" (after considering opportunities for profit) and then push your own solution before someone else comes with a better, and real one?

you make the disease, and you sell the treatments. thats how entities like microsoft and apple works, and in general, most mega corporations, as well as big pharma (which funny enough, is also part of bill gates bs).

thats also how intelligence agencies usually work: sabotage foreign govs before they become economic competitors. thats real life, like it or not. disrupt, create chaos, use it to force a solution that without stress, fear, anger and anxiety no one reasonable would accept.

if some things have improved or more or less work ok, isnt thanks to their "good will" but because some people have pushed back, and they have been forced to stop one bs, to then try another new way to push the same bs (read about the history of sopa, pipa, acta, etc).

Same reason that you can't turn off telemetry on non-corporate versions on Windows 10/11.
