The price difference between the 256 and 512 GB version is indeed again pretty high, I'm just wondering how good the etched screen could be. I would also lean to the premium version normally, because if I'm going to be using it a lot then I want the best, but we simply don't have enough to go on right now... It's such a shame you have to device right now which version you want to reserve.
I reserved the base model. It's a portable PC and it will presumably be possible to upgrade. If that's the case then there's no reason to splurge on the higher cost devices unless you just want to show valve your support. Could be wrong, but I'm hoping there is an empty NVME slot.
I ended up going for the 256 GB model though because I figure I'll barely ever really want to play outside, so the glare screen doesn't matter... And I already have a spare USB C 1 TB SSD laying around that I can put my less used games on. 256 should be plenty to for instance put one or two fallout games and Skyrim on and mod them to hell and back :D (no need for high quality texture packs on a device like this so biggest mods are out anyway).
Honestly, I reserved the 512GB version for a lot of reasons. But, mainly because the base model's 64GB is NOT an NVMe SSD, like the 256GB and 512GB models. Trust me, even if you only needed 64GB (which, would hold maybe one or two small games, at best) you'd encounter much slower read/write times on the base model vs. the other two.
Plus, if you intended on installing Windows on your Steam Deck? 64GB is going to be way to small for just a bare-bones install of Windows 10 (or Windows 11), excluding all the updates & drivers you'd need to get after the Windows OS is installed.
Price is a bit high but I can justify saving bit by bit over next few months to a point where I won’t mind. I typically spend the difference on the average steam sale anyway so I don’t mind.
Top it all off, it’s also just a computer and I can do anything I want with it. sub-€700 for all that? Yes please. Saves me getting a laptop+console+controller which would individually cost more anyway.
