Steam Deck
Don't believe the goofballs that say you can use the deck as an arch linux PC
Long story short, a while back, I needed to install gnome-boxes to install a virtual machine, in order to run ms windows virtual machine. After some crappy hacky pacman stuff, I got it running.
Fast forward to the latest update, which wipes out all these changes, and no VM anymore, it can't even be reinstalled due to package conflicts. Stop BSing please. Steam Deck is not archlinux.
No need to tell me about awkward options that I'm already aware of, but will not be using, such as dual booting. Especially because there is no guarantee any of that will work in the future.
So, no VM, no VPN software, and AURs are [hearting] bovine feces. Just give up and get a laptop if you want arch linux. Steam Deck is not a PC, unless you deliberately screw it with a different OS, which is besides the point.

I bought a deck for someone, and they use it as their only PC and have done so for months now.

I use mine to host torrents (like legal Linux ISOs) and as a media center PC, as well as for light browsing.

Like I said before, flat packs are the game changer.

The Steam Deck is treated as an immutable system, so it can revert local changes when you update. However, flat packs are an isolated install that does not alter the core OS, so your flatpacks should remain even after an update. Things like a your desktop background should remain consistent as well.

I think you meant "Don't believe the goofballs that say you can use SteamOS as an arch linux", because it's not arch linux, it's SteamOS.

I have been using it for last 7 months as my laptop / desktop replacement for my second apartment. Works pretty well for Youtube, checking mails, reading news and doing some programing for work.

No idea what you are talking about.
Just install everything over flatpacks and you are good to go.

wrong tool for the job. you can get a ~$100-150 used dell optiplex from the past few years and run a multitude of things on it, and run them properly centralized for many clients to consume. i need to upgrade, but i had plex/channelsdvr/3x4kcameras+DVR/AI camera detection/unifi controller/~500 torrent box/docker containers/etc/etc/etc and it ran great.

the client media server PC needs a strong GPU to play remux 4k high-bitrate content, as i just came out of this rabbit hole. 4090 makes these remuxes look damn good, with custom mpv in plex htpc. then you get into hdmi/hdr standards, things like DV/HDR10+, lossless atmos. good luck with all this on a deck :104:

people think the deck can breaks the laws of physics and it never stops being funny :bobsburgers:
I have one (also an ipad, laptop, desktop, raspberry pi, etc.), but it uses too much power and spits out too much heat for me to use it as an always on machine. And I am not playing the deck constantly, so this makes use of a low power low heat device that I already own.

Its win-win, as they say.

Agreed, it is not a PC :cleanfloppy:

it's an objective truth that the deck is a PC, what are you yapping about?

I think you meant "Don't believe the goofballs that say you can use SteamOS as an arch linux", because it's not arch linux, it's SteamOS.

Fair enough, but it should be implied that you want to game on it, if you have one. You didn't go to best buy and randomly got it. And replacing the OS renders the point of the steam deck moot, due to hassle. Not that putting proper linux on it would be as bad as Windows on it, but it's still pretty bad in long term use, for the main purpose.

SteamOS is perfect for people who don't want hassle. OP is complaining about terminal and pacman, which is advanced level stuff.

It’s not even a games machine.

I wanted to use mine offline, and it won’t let me play any games unless I update first. = Epic Fail !

I am the OP. And I wasn't complaining about terminal. Terminal works just fine. It was a warning to others to not fall for the zealots overselling the steam deck as an all in one Linux PC.
