Steam Deck

Steam Deck

When I press the left stick I hear a crunch instead of a normal click.
I recently received my new Steam Dec OLED. When I press (precisely press and not rotate), I hear a click and crunch and not a click like on the right stick. This crunch is very annoying and it feels like the left stick is being pressed easier than it should be. Is it worth replacing the device under warranty?

i've held 2 OLEDs and the left sticks "presses" are slightly different than the right on both

you can search around and see this is very common. if you do RMA it, you have a high chance of being without a deck, then receiving one with the same "issue"

This is what I'm afraid of, that the new device will have the same problem. Maybe it depends on the revision and the new revisions solved the problem? By the way, I have two Steam controllers and one of them has the same problem on the stick. This sound really irritates me, like sand crunching or like a joint crunching when injured.

steam controller probably using the same part then or something, i'm not a hardware expert, but i know they went cheaper on parts to keep the price down.

i really only feel it, as my TV or music is so loud in the background. i know that's not a solution though.

worst case is you could replace it yourself and ensure it's done correctly. but if this is an issue with the part itself, then i have no clue. that's another level of who knows.

i personally put this under "there's much worse things that could happen", but that's going to be up to the purchaser and what they feel. this is such a widespread issue i would never RMA, valve will just say yes to make someone happy then tell you too bad when it happens again.

Sorry, this might be off topic but your mindset about there being worse issues helps me think the same. My Deck works and plays perfectly fine but there are a few quirks that have made me wonder if mine is defective and deserves an RMA. These quirks are SUPER tiny though, and I’ve never been able to find a definitive answer if they spell trouble for my device’s future. Out of curiosity, have you noticed that the left haptics feel slightly different than the right? The left feels and sounds just a hair louder than the right, and I’ve attributed this to the desktop layout making it a scroll wheel and the game mode layout making it a D-pad. I haven’t been super concerned about it, but it does tend to float in the back of mind, alongside another concern of a faint fan buzz/click that goes off when the fan starts spinning on the updated fan controls. My device is brand new, too.
