Can the Steam Deck replace a PC
So yeah, my question is if the SD can replace a PC (ONLY FOR GAMING), I already have a "capable enough" laptop in which I can do work for uni...

It's designed to keep users from directly screwing up the OS. Depending on your needs as a desktop, that destruction prevention can block certain application needs from being easily installed.

Depending on what you want to do with a desktop, the way the SteamOS is setup could make that difficult.

The correct answer is "Yes, but..."

I love my Steam Deck, but I wouldn't want it to be my only PC.

Sounds like you have a laptop for non-gaming related tasks, which is good. I assume you are looking to keep your laptop as a productivity device and just game exclusively on the Deck?

This will work well if the games you want to play work well on the Deck. If you're primarily a single-player gamer, you're probably in good shape. The problem arises when you want to play certain multiplayer games with aggressive anti-cheat that refuses to work on Linux. No matter how good the Deck is, if you want to play Destiny 2 and Fortnite, you'll be disappointed with it, in much the same way as you would be disappointed with a Playstation if you wanted to play Halo.

There's also the issue of how tolerant you are of needing to make compromises with the newest AAA titles. The Deck is awesome, but for the latest most demanding games you're still looking at 720p, low-medium settings, 30 fps. Personally, I think this is perfectly playable, but I would still rather play extremely demanding games on my desktop, 1440p, high settings 100+fps.

The Deck is a great device and I highly recommend it, but it's not made of miracles, and your expectations should be tempered. It is a 15 watt, battery powered portable handheld first and foremost, and you are not going to get desktop-level performance out of it. Understand this, and you'll be fine.

Talking only about gaming here, the things I do on my desktop I can also do on my laptop.
What im really wondering about its what others think about the idea I had for a while, selling my desktop pc and to still be able to do gaming, buy a steam deck in replacement...

I mean, im probably doing it anyways but it was to hear others opinions on the matter

As long as you understand the Deck was designed to play games at 720/800P, then you'll be fine. Even then, there are some titles (if you like city builders) that will bring it to a crawl. The Deck doesn't replace a modern laptop.

What I would recommend, is to search YouTube for the games you mainly play (i.e. "game name steam deck"). See what's working and what the performance is like. If you plan to hook this up to a 1080p or 4K screen, you likely won't be happy.

Wow, thanks for this masterpiece of a reply, yes ive been researching a lot about the Steam Deck (Specifically the OLED) and it quite amazes me what a piece of tech it is.

I have my expectations for the Steam Deck at a realistic level, all of the games I play and care about are perfectly playable (Besides Rust, but honestly I prefer working a 9 to 5 than playing Rust, at least I get paid) and I dont care about those AAA titles that wont run that well, since most of them I couldnt care less like a God of War or Horizon, or others are straight out bad like Starfield...

As far as ive seen, 40 fps on the Steam Deck is as smooth as 60 fps on a fairly big display, since the screen is smaller and movements in between frames dont travel as much distance as on a desktop monitor and the eye doesnt notice, so playing a game like Elden RIng at 40 fps on a portable machine its pretty nutty.

And also if im not convinced about only Steam Deck or I really want to play something like lets say GTA VI, then I can just build another PC. (I would be really sad if MH Wilds doesnt run on the steam deck)

Yeah all games I like are perfectly playable and run smooth on the steam deck, even then there are few recent releases that dont play well on the sd and most of the time its because the games are not optimized

Well, Rise and World are great experiences on the Deck. I would expect the same from Wilds, and if not, Proton is a constantly evolving beast. What doesn't work today will probably work tomorrow.

The Deck can replace another Pc jsut fine. When my gaming battlestation/main workstation died, I moved my Deck dock frklm the living room to the desk & had a genuine fully-fledged computing experience. Including games, of course.

The deck is a pretty capable device if you put your expectations in check. It can play a lot of older AAA games just fine but newer games barely reach 30 fps.

Honestly I know this opinion isn’t going to jive with a lot of people but if you are going to buy the OLED deck than just buy ROG ally or a Lenovo legion go. Both of those handhelds can play games at almost double the performance.

Exactly, and also (Im not very informed about this) if FSR 3 gets "implemented" well on Steam Deck (specifically on Steam OS) then it could be future proof for a lot of years...
But again idk how well is FSR 3 doing rn, and whats the progress on it for the steam deck

It really depends, a game like Starfield doesnt run well on steam deck, but its a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game anyways, then a game like Lies of P runs at 60 fps no problem, and then theres games like Helldivers 2 that run well (40 fpscapped) but when on a later stage the amount of monsters and players drop those fps to 20...

Optimization is king

The key is researching so you are making an informed decision. That's what I was trying to get you to do earlier. Don't ask others what you should or shouldn't do. Do research and make a decision that's best for you.

Yeah bro dw, im asking more like "what do you think" rather than "what should I do", ive been looking up information about the steam deck for the past 2 weeks and im pretty confident that I know what it can and cant do, just that I wanted to know what others opinion's are on the matter just out of curiosity, and maybe even get advice.
