This device is straight-up obnoxious garbage
I'm about ready to spike this thing into a dumpster.

I'm getting CONSTANT shader cache updates. And I'm not being hyperbolic. I mean CONSTANT. 50+ games every single time it boots, (1.5 GB of 'updates') almost without fail. Pair that with the abysmal wifi on this device; and it takes 15 to 20 minutes, sometimes longer. Running the device with the wifi disabled is basically pointless, since a ton of games require online DRM of some sort. So I'm stuck committing to the updates and wasting time, or nixing half of the library -- making the upgraded SSD and SD card pointless.

The face buttons STILL stick and grind after several months of use, and the device slowly kills its own battery when docked. So I'm stuck choosing between using a passable controller, or preserving the battery.

A tablet and a 40-dollar controller outclasses this thing by miles. I will never complain about Android or Windows again after this thing.

You can disable the Shader Cache downloads until Valve fixes the issue.

After eight months of playing whack-a-mole with Steam OS and the deck... I'm burnt out, man. Appreciate the advice tho. I'll definitely do that if I boot it up again.

SteamOS 3.5.7 is as stable as Jelly.

It’s all one big beta.

Maybe you should try a Rog ally then, see how you like it but considering how great the deck is overall (sold my ally for one), I could personally care less about some downloads.

Nah, I don't feel like being a beta tester for another potential e-waste device. The deck is going to my kid, and will likely be used exclusively docked and offline until she's old enough for a proper PC.

It’s all about patience..
I have given up at present.
Everything was fine until the Firmware just started borking, failing and screwing up the system.. :steambored:

The firmware that made the SD cards for instance, disappear, how brilliant that was..

I will give it ago at 4.0 :cleanfloppy:

Until then, screw the constant disappointment. :steamfacepalm:

Maybe by the time my daughter can read the patch notes, it'll be stable. So in about three years, give or take.

Why have you got so many games installed? Talk about a waste of hard drive space.

Well it's ****ing useless as a streaming device, so I assumed I could at least run games on it natively. Apparently that's wrongthink to Deck zealots too.

Why don't you explain how I should be using 1.5 TB of storage, friend. I was under the impression this was a PORTABLE device that could be used to play my Steam library. **** me, amirite.

Why booting the Deck anyway? The sleep mode works just fine.

How is that relevant to literally anything?

Waking the device from sleep yields the exact same results, and often results in the deck not even being able to recognize something as simple as a wired controller or a connected display.

Hm. That's interesting. I don't get shader cache downloads when waking up. Booting, yes; waking up, no.

you can disable the Shader cache on desktop mode, it's literally unticking one box, and you can fix the biggest annoyance.
Steam > settings > downloads > Shader pre-caching
as far as face buttons sticking or grinding, I never had that problem and never heard of it, it could be a QC issue on your deck, and if by "killing" battery you mean it slowly discharges you are probably using a different charger and if you mean it hurts battery health, the Deck should keep the battery at around 90ish% charge while docked for a long time saving it, I have my deck almost always plugged in, since august 2022 maybe discharged 20 times and the battery health brand new was 91% and now is 84%
Hope this helps
