How do I switch between game and system controls for PCSX2? I use EmuDeck

I set everything up nice and easy a while back and PS2 games run like a dream through Steam's launcher. It seems that by pressing the right ... button twice I can switch between System Controls (star brings up the PCSX2 menu, select seems to pause emulation) but things don't quite work right even then, sometimes this goes smoothly and I can switch between system and in-game controls just fine, sometimes I keep pressing random buttons until I get either system controls if I need them or in-game controls.
Earlier I was playing burnout 2 and somehow the emulation paused after I pressed select, pressing select again didn't unpause anything, I started hitting buttons and button combinations and somehow got the emulation unpaused, then some more random presses and I got control of the game back.
I hate feeling stupid, I'm not new to emulation or anything I just don't know the commands.

Sometimes a system command list flashes on screen but I can't see well so reading the commands while holding whatever buttons are required so the list stays on screen is impossible and it just flashes and i can't see what's what.

google is of no use as modern search engines are pointless so I had to ask here

'...' button + dpad left = escape it should bring up pcsx2 on screen menu
and if you hold the three lines button it switches between the deck outputting keyboard+mouse and gamepad controls
