Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Trying to get Steam Link between Steam Deck and Firestick working
I'm about ready to tear my hair out.

Here is the setup:
Brand new 64GB Steam Deck from Valve, had some weird issues with desktop mode discover program crashing so did factory reset and patched up to current stable 3.5.7 20231122.1 (Discover still crashes sometimes, doesn't give error log, disappointed something is broken out of the box)

Firestick 4k plugged into a dumb 1080p TV. Sideloaded the Steam Link app from the official website, version 1.3.9.258 on Amazon AFTMM Android 7.1.2

Everything is connected to a 5GHz wifi network.

Steam Link app in Firestick detects the Steam Deck, pin worked when I connected them.

Try to connect to Steam Deck from app on Firestick: Black screen, audio working, remote control passing controls to Steam Deck.

Tried turning off Hardware Decoding, no change. Tried changing resolution, no change. Tried in both Game Mode and Desktop Mode.

Was able to get it working on my Macbook Air, so I know the Firestick is capable of getting video. Painful irony Valve's app works better on a device not made by Valve.

Why is this so difficult? I don't really want to have to get a bunch of wireless peripherals and use this thing docked. Is there some other way to get it to wirelessly connect to a Firestick?

If you are getting a black screen it is usually an issue with the hardware encoding on the host system, not an issue with hardware decoding on the device streaming from the host.

On the Steam Deck in desktop mode go into the Steam client settings, in the remote play settings, go to the Advanced Host Options and choose to disable hardware encoding.

They try again with the Steam Client running in desktop mode.

Also for the OP if they are still watching this thread, you can also use Moonlight[github.com] to stream from Steam Deck to another device. It takes a bit more to get it setup and working on Steam Deck but it is an alternative that can work.
Thanks for this guys will give it ago x
Thanks for your help but there is no option to remove hardware encoding on the remote play settings page

Why though? The Deck is small, you can dock it right next to your TV, omit streaming entirely.

To use it as a controller. Having same issue here. Have extra controller but want to use steam deck as a controller also to play co-op on TV.

Are you in Game mode or the Steam Client in desktop mode?

Don't see the option to disable hardware encoding in neither Game or desktop mode.

Doesnt matter which mode, just go Into Settings in Game mode > Remote Play > Turn Advanced client option on > and at the Bottom is hardware encoding

Valve released new version of SteamOS with fixes for remote play. For me it is still not working... maybe anyone can find a way.
