World of Warcraft on steam deck crashing

Heya. So I sent steam support a message about this and they told me to post the here but I've been playing retail wow on my stream deck and it seems to be crashing in crowded areas like big cities and battlegrounds like the whole deck freezes and needs to be reset it hasn't happened in other games. There's a thread on the steam deck reddit of other people having this exact problem so I was just hoping to put some light on it in case anyone has a fix or perhaps the devs could patch a fix in a later version of steam os.

Does it say "verifying installation"?

It does do the verifying sometimes. Other times it just black screens or freezes and I have to reset the whole thing myself . As for whether it's blizzards job idk valve support told me it may be changed in future steam os version so it might be something valve can do. I know this does not happen on my windows 10 computer so it could just be a general Linux problem but I wouldn't know as the deck is my only Linux device.

There is a general problem with the gpu driver crashing at random right now. It might be deck specific or more generally a linux problem, but lots of people are affected. No word on how long it might take to fix.

I've never had that type of crash (installed Battle.net and Curseforge using Lutris), but the game sometimes locks up when loading into a character, forcing a force-restart of the Deck. Other than that, great experience thanks to the ConsolePort addon.

Yeah I've had that lock up too TentacleMayor. And yes the consoleport addon is amazing :)

I know it's a bit inappropriate to revive a thread, but this is the most recent thing I could find on google besides reddit. I don't have a reddit account.

So I am experiencing a similar thing except it hard crashes my entire steam deck after 30ish minutes. Not just the game. The crashing was happening on a fresh install of the launcher while I was simply downloading the game. It crashed my steam deck 3 times during the download process, and I had not even launched it yet.

I was using experimental proton for wow. Used to use proton-ge 7-53 with zero issues... But then blizzard launcher updated something back in december last year. Not only did it log me out, it wouldn't let me login after that and would crash after 5 minutes anyhow... Login button never showed and hitting enter did nothing.

So it kinda got my hopes up...

Has anyone figured out a fix since then?

Never had this, but did you install the launcher using Lutris? Either way, I would do a fresh install using Lutris and I think I had to at one point after a battle.net update.

@TentacleMayor Nah, I prefer to do things manually. Last time I relied on a program to do the work for me, it caused more problems than it was worth. For instance EmuDeck made wayland unstable. Eventually it broke my install and I had to start fresh. Probably a coincidence, but either way I'm not one to sit around and let others do things for me. Even if it's an automated program.

I just slapped it in a folder in one of the common folders for steam, added it as a non-steam game in steam, then set the compatibility to Proton-GE 7-53. Then when I decided to try experimental, I simply switched it.

I COULD delete the compatdata, but I doubt it would fix a problem like this. Never had a game crash the gpu consistently like this.

What about the battle.net client crashing the entire instance after ~30 minutes no matter what?

Finally got around to testing this, it did not work. flew into Valdraken to turn in a quest and it crashed within 5 minutes. Someone on the blizz forums suggested it may be UI related, but sadly I can't play wow without like a million add-ons so I don't know if much can be done for me, but if you can play wow without addons perhaps that may be a fix for anyone else having this problem.
