Steam Deck

Steam Deck

How do fps games feel on the steam deck?
Am considering getting one though I primarily play fps games. I do like a lot of metroidvanias, roguelikes, platformers, and other games, though I mostly like playing Quake, Tf2, Blood, Half Life, Ultrakill, etc. Since the handheld doesn't exactly have a mouse and instead touchpads, control sticks, and gyro, how does camera movement feel on the steam deck when utilizing some of these features in fps games?

I've found a few older FPSs (Quake, HL2 and chapters, early Fallouts) that I can play on the SD but most ones that I'm used to playing on a PC are a bit "inputty" (my word) to deal with on the deck. I'm not as coordinated as I used to be. I'm slowly tweaking games to my liking as I go and a few are clued in, to include the gyro. Camera movement is what I consider last or not at all, so can't help you there.

You may have an easier time with it according to your preferences and how you play. I play a lot of golf, for a go-to game, as the inputs are minimal and very easy to tweak. FPSs are definitely playable depending on your level of understanding of the SD's features to adjust the individual settings and your preferences of. You'll also find games of all genres that play surprisingly well...from an uncoordinated old guy's perspective. As I've said before, It's been the best purchase that I've ever made. One that's lived up to the hype. Go get some!

Bit worried about this myself as I can't play the overwhelming majority of shooters on controller but oh well, the extra features the Deck has compared to a controller should make it slightly better and I have plenty of other games to play on it too.

Mouse aim on the track pad, you'll never want to go back. :)

I haven't played 1st person shooters, but I have played several 3rd person shooters and they all feel fine, as long as you are used to playing on a controller.

If you dock the Deck then you can use a mouse and keyboard too, so you can play that way at home and on controller on the go if you really wanted to.

Track pad and flick sticks are popular

While things have changed quite a lot with Steam Input since the original Steam Controller launch, a lot of what GamerMuscle shows in this video you can do and have been further improved upon.

While Steam Deck isn’t something I’d want to use in competitive for an FPS, it is definitely serviceable if you bother to delve into the customizable controller options.

As for the other game types noted in the OP, they are fantastic on Steam Deck. DeadCells is one of the best experiences on Steam Deck.

Considering the variety of preferrnces and options you have with the steam deck, including gyro and the mousepads, you’re probably right.

Quite smooth and unexpectedly enjoyable on Satisfactory here.

I’ve played quite a few first person shooters like killing floor 2 and always had an enjoyable time. Going from mouse to controller may feel jarring at first but like anything you will eventually get use to it.

I don't think you'll ever be competitive playing on the Steam Deck, but for casual play and singleplayer it's really good! My personal favorite way is ordinary thumbstick aiming, but with gyro aim for finer adjustments. There's a lot of different options though. Touchpad, flickstick, and an infinite way to fine tune the controls to what's comfortable for you.

Personally for me, I am having issues getting used to playing world of tanks on the deck...which is sorta FPS-ish... It's the only game I still play on my pc. Otherwise the deck literally replaced my pc for every other game I have. It requires precise aiming and input and I just can't get used to the trackpad/gyro combo... Yet. Graphically it runs flawlessly though.

Some of the non competitive FPS like fallout 3 plays well enough.

That's the same that I do with Fallout 4. It's a bit too complicated, coordination-wise, for me on the deck so it's the go-to game on my PC and I leave it there. Like you say, like anything else, it just takes some getting used to and practice. The first 3 months using the deck through my hands for a loop!

They're mostly fine, but honestly it's not the controls that cause an issue, it's the tiny screen. Especially in games like CoD where headglitching is common, or games like Squad or Arma where you need to be able to pick up small movements from very far distances. Though you can get around that by docking it to a monitor or something

Like a turd that's stuck and won't come out all the way.

I play GTA 5 a lot on the Deck and I can safely say I enjoy it way more than playing on my PC, with a controller at least. I've got 2 of the back buttons mapped to L3 and R3 for honking/crouching and looking behind me (I find them easier to press than clicking in the sticks), and I have it so that the right trackpad acts as a mouse and also activates the gyro when I put my finger on it. It makes precise aiming way easier.

Minecraft Java also works surprisingly well with this control setup
