LCD to OLED upgrade?
Hi everyone, I was wondering if I can give back my LCD Steam Deck to get an OLED one to Steam, paying a difference. I know it may be a dumb question, but would awesome to do it for the one that pre-ordered the 1st version supporting the project... I was wondering if it possible cause I've seen steam also sells refurbished decks.

You can't, they don't have a trade-in program. Your Steam Deck would have to be broken to send anything in to have it refurbished. You're best bet is trying to sell your current Deck. I'm going to wait for a price drop on the OLED or I'll see if a better handheld comes out.

I upgraded to an OLED and planned to sell the LCD model for half of OLED, I might end up returning the OLED.

It's a nice upgrade for the most part (aside from trackpads which feels incredibly off, better haptics and click though), but for 300-350€ after selling LCD it's clear that they only really focused on new owners

My recommendation is just stick with what's working for now.

As a LCD deck owner, IMO it is perfectly fine that no trade-in program was offered, those LCD deck needed to be get-rid of, if they provide an attractive trade-in program for existing LCD deck owner, someone would have to pay for the cost, either a higher price for OLED deck, or somewhere else, nothing is for free.

The real problem I have with Valve, however, is they rushed the 3.5 Steam OS release to make it ship with OLED deck. The "Stable" channel is anything but stable after they push 3.5 to the stable, the performance regression and other bugs reported are just unthinkable on the stable release.... and many bugs still persist after more than 3 weeks, I doubt they will get those issues sorted out before Christmas holiday....

There are talks about p2p support to a few realtek chipsets. I believe it will take a few years unless people test mainline kernels. Miracast may be possible on the steam deck one day.

FWIW, there are some positives and negatives of the OLED at this point in time. It may be a good idea to wait it out a bit. For example, depending on your home network, the OLED updated wifi may not connect to it. HDR is still hit or miss. Some games don't detect the OLED Deck is capable of supporting HDR. I'm confident Valve will address these issues, but it's going to take some time.

That being said, I currently have both. If you mainly use your Deck in Game Mode without external gamepads, the OLED upgrade is worth it. I don't think it's worth it for those who mainly use it docked or with a TV. In Game Mode using it as a true handheld, the differences are noticeable and welcome (even without the LE version).

Yes, I use it only in handled mode! I will wait a bit and then I will decide...thanks for the feedback

Just started to use my OLED model, compared with my LCD model, it is a okay upgrade, if I had stood and played an OLED model in a shop then, I would of thought nah, just stick with the LCD model..... The LCD panel on the Steamdeck is actually pretty good..... But I will say if you have an original LCD screen Nintendo switch... Then yes what a difference the Nintendo switch OLED screen makes... But the Nintendo original LCD panel is trash.

As someone who bought a refurbished 256GB LCD and a 512GB OLED:

If you're buying your 1st SD and genuinely have money to burn: Buy the OLED
If you're on a budget or want to buy a Steam Deck at a justifiable price: Buy the LCD model.

The OLED is nice, but paying twice as much for it wasn't worth it, especially when performance is very similar and not everything is tailored to look nice on OLED (unlike the Vita).
