VRR — When?
As impressive as the Steam Deck OLED is it doesn’t support VRR.
Anyone know the reason for this? Is it something Valve can add via a future software fix or it the OLED retarded?

VRR isn't justified for Steam Deck. Maybe the second gen will have it. For now, most of the games doesn't run above 45fps

Isn’t justified? Smoothing out anything over 30 is justified.

Yeah, I also think VRR is very much justified on the deck. It's a missed opportunity.

Below 60 fps isn't justified, for me.

When Valve can sell like 10 million decks. Valve will need a custom panel because I do not think there are that many OLED displays on the market that is durable, cheap, has VRR, Valve is piggy backing off Nintendo and Valve still needs two suppliers for the OLED deck.

It isn't a software issue. The display isn't VRR, most likely because the interface is MIPI which doesn't really do VRR.

Good for you. Now, for the rest of the world…
I don't get this obsession with VRR. This isn't a locked console, you can disable Vsync for any game pretty much

If you prefer inconsistent frame times, sure. But regardless, you can get just about the same effect by setting the display to 90 Hz and letting the game render as many frames as it can

Of course, I can't speak for other people, but I don't notice screen tearing at higher refresh rates. If you do, yeah, maybe that's an issue, but I feel at 90 Hz it's not even worth sacrificing a little bit of latency to enable VRR

Smooth gameplay, man. Smooth gameplay. I use G-sync all the time and it’s a Godsend. My frame frame is fluctuating wildly but the gameplay is buttery smooth.

You can lock the framerate and adjust the refresh to something divisible in order to effectively get the same benefits of VRR manually.

I don’t want to lock my framerate though. Not if i can get into the 40’s for much of the time with dips into the 30’s. I want to benefit from those 40 sections when they are available.

With the OLED you should be able to lock the refresh to 80 hz, which is divisible by 40. That is a struggle with the LCD model though, when 60 doesn't divide evenly by 40, so your only option is to lock it to 30, even though it would run faster.

I literally don't see the difference. Just disable vsync

Have you used G-Sync or VRR before? It’s not something you see, it’s something you feel.

I mean, the goal of the various VRR implementations is that you won’t see the consequences of mismatching FPS and refresh rate and reduce any tearing from FPS spikes or drops, while not limiting FPS or introducing additional latency like Vsync sometimes does.
