Bizzare shoulder button issues
I recently picked up my steam deck and wanted to play a few games on it and I noticed while I was playing f-zero that the shoulder buttons just dont even work anymore

This is incredibly weird. I never used them at all, the only games I ever used them for were Minecraft and a few SNES games, and the day before they were working absolutely fine and had a click to them.

Now they are mushy and don't have any input. I literally never leave this thing out of its case or dock when im not using it, and the only time I ever dropped it the thing bounced against one soft surface and landed on another without any issue afterwards.

Is this a common issue? I would like to attempt to fix this on my own, and im worried about RMAing the thing because I swapped out the drive for a TB drive a while back.

Sadly, you can't change them since they are soldered to the two daughterboards of the controller and they don't sell that part because "calibration software is not available". I'll probably try to ping them again, since that's the easier part to break on the first gen Deck.

Just to confirm, if you go into the SteamOS Settings menu, Controller, then Test Device Inputs, the shoulder buttons don't register there?

Yep. The shoulder buttons are the weakest part of the OG steam deck. In the Deck OLED, they move the button to a joystick. Put back the original drive and RMA. If it get worse, try to suggest credit for swapping in OLED deck because the buttons are fragile.

So you lose two buttons? That doesn’t even make sense
