Then how are Nintendo doing it and how did Rog Ally do it? Its literally slapping a custom oled to a rog ally with your own os. They can now request a custom oled screen made for them as they now have the desired reputation and contacts.
Just call the supplier and order some 8 inch oled screens?
We don't have definitive specs for the Switch 2 yet. That's all speculation.
The ROG Ally and Legion Go sort of did it, but sloppily. They just brute force the problem by throwing more wattage at it. This means more heat and less efficiency. Worst case scenario battery for both is under and hour. 40 minutes in the Ally's case.
Valve doesn't want to brute force it. They want to do it right, balancing performance with efficiency, and the tech just isn't there yet. So until it is, no Steam Deck 2.
Here is a reference in case anyone is wondering what I am talking about in regards to a "controller only variant": https://archive.ph/Kj91p
Switch 2 will probably be slight faster than the Deck 2. I believe Valve is waiting for LPDDR6 to be released.
I doubt the switch 2 will be a whole lot better than the current version of the deck.
It really isn't a better approach though.
Brute forcing the problem cause quicker wear and tear on the device because the average user won't sit there and tinker with TDP settings to optimize it. This along with, as others said, the brute forcing gains are negligible to the actual increase in power usage.
As an owner of 1400 games on my steam account, im not buying any gaming device that cannot use my steam library.

Personally, I can't wait for the OLED model! It looks fantastic!
Sure, except you can do that with the Deck, and thanks to the efficient, custom SOC it just scales down better than the Z1 extreme devices, performing better at a lower TDP.
But you are correct if performance is the end-all-be-all metric, Z1 extreme powered devices have the Deck beat. There's no arguing against it. Crank it up and enjoy better performance, just don't wander too far from a power outlet.
Because the Z1E in the Ally can draw enough power to drain the battery while plugged in when in turbo mode.
