It's not just the anti-cheat.

:nkCool:

Why not have the anti cheat run on Linux? Not like cod isn’t filled to the brim with hackers.
ikr
Any anticheat that works through the windows kernal will not work in Linux.

it's call develop a linux variant. Hell, or don't. Enough SKIDs in the game anyway. Not gonna help

That's not true. EAC is a kernel level anti cheat. It's literally adding one file to its folder and a software toggle that determines whether it works on Linux or not. That file is included in newer builds of EAC.

Yes, inevitably some kernel level anti cheats will not work in Linux, but there are others that do, and for those that can be Linux compatible but aren't, it's down due to either:
Developer/publisher incompetence
Developer/publisher malice
The software is abandonware

And linux has a kernel.... Thus a variation can be built to run on linux. Some (hell I'd imagine most) who use linux may not WANT a game that hooks into their kernel. But you could make it an option.

there are legal questions about whether a kernel module could even be closed-source, and even then the anti-cheat developer would have to compile it to way too many kernel versions (since distribution developers can't do it themselves due to it being closed-source) for it to be worthwhile. And then there is the Linux kernel itself, which can be modified and recompiled by anyone to lie to that anti-cheat anyways.

it is not happening.

Because Activision doesn't want you to, not really Valve's fault. The old call of duty games work though.
The older COD games are genuine security risks if you try to play them on PC. All of them contain RCE exploits that allow an attacker to gain full control of your PC. But even without the RCE exploit, all of them are infested with cheaters and are basically unplayable online because Activision doesn't care.

That's cool but also irrelevant to the discussion. Thankfully that has never happened to me yet and I play quite frequently. I wonder if the Windows install being emulated on Proton acts as another line of defense for these things. Cheaters do happen sometimes on games like MW2/3, but the ones that have dedicated servers (waw, bo1) are mostly cheat-free because of the server mods or fast acting admins.

Sad. You'd think they'd see this as an untapped market. Playing actual cod on the go, not the mobile version, but I bet you they'll tout it with the xbox handheld.
Probably so, but for what it's worth and as much as I love the steam deck, an Xbox handheld would sell a whole lot more. Sony really messed up with their streaming device, they could have been kings again like in the PSP days.
Not gonna lie if they did a PC/Xbox hybrid handheld that'd be the only legitimate competitor, putting morals aside and evaluating only pure functionality as long as they made the Windows part more usable with a controller or enabled to install SteamOS while also having a the XboxOS partition that'd beat the Deck. I'd be tempted not gonna lie if it could play 360 back compat games. I think they are gonna do a handheld when ARM further improves.

There are no kernel mode ACs on linux, EAC/Battleye are user mode on Linux hence why they explicitly have to be enabled by the developers.

Probably not an issue on linux. They can still ♥♥♥♥ up your stats and matches tho.

A ton of folks using Windows don't want any AC on their kernel either. Some (including me) even go as far as calling that abhorrent ♥♥♥♥ "rootkits in disguise".

It can’t run on steam deck because they like to spy on kids with kernel level “anti-cheat” (joking). The anti cheat doesn’t even work and there’s plenty of other anti cheat tools that support linux (not joking). There’s isn’t a good reason other than they don’t care about this community.
Still no sign of call of duty enabling play on Linux/steam deck. ♥♥♥♥♥♥ wack
well at least they haven't released a call of duty worth playing on Windows either
I dont know why anyone thinks those games are even worth their time. theres so many fps games to choose from now, just find a new favorite. History favors those who are willing to adapt.
