"Not Enough Free Disk Space" But There Is Enough Free Disk Space
I'm at a loss right now, my home folder has 14.4 GB of free disk space and it refuses to download a 615 MB update for a game? Can you at least tell me how much free disk space you expect, and why?!

Yea. shader cache probably filled the space. You should clear it. You should look around guide on how to remove it.
There is literally 14.4 GB of free space. Free means free, it's not occupied by any data

Are you sure? The storage usage has historically been wrong.

Did you update to October 25 client update?

It probably depends on the size of the game and they way the dev is patching it.

The way most patch software works is that it's patching at a bit level to the actual files. When it does this, you typically need 3x the space of the installed game. You'll have the install, the copy of the install, and then the files that end up patched. Once done, it cleans itself up and you end up with just 1 copy of the files. In some situations, if the title supports cloud saves, it's almost better to just uninstall and reinstall which will come down with the latest version.

The storage usage has been wrong? What does that mean?

I am not aware of that. Dolphin shows storage space accurately as far as I'm aware

If that's true that's incredibly stupid, but why can't Steam tell me how much space it needs? I'm not going to delete or move stuff until it magically works.

I was talking about the steam client. Nevermind, you are probably right.

Steam/Valve doesn't determine "how" developers choose to patch their games. I'm not saying that is your issue, but it could be. What is the install size of the game?

14.91 GB. Hot Wheels Unleashed 2. It's too late now though, I'm already at a LAN. Thanks anyway

Yea, my guess is that whatever the update is doing, it's needing at least 2x the space. An uninstall and reinstall would be the best choice when you can. You'll get the latest build without dealing with the update process.
Thanks for the info. But yeah, seems really stupid for devs to do it this way. That reminds me of games that are hosted on websites and have no self-updater, so to update you need to download the newest version again from scratch. That's just about the same thing here
