Issue with sd card reader
Hey guys,

I have a 1TB sandisk microSD card that I use for my Steam Deck. I have an SD Card reader that connects to my comp (windows) via USB, when I plug it in whether the actual USB or the micro SD card into the reader, it always makes a beep noise, so I know it's recognizing it. Same as when I take it out of my comp.

But the Micro SD card option never pops up on my computer, there's no way to view it or access it, so it's impossible to move files from my comp to my Micro SD card.

The brand is smartquickly and it's USB 3.0.

I've tried all USB ports on my comp as well as restarting multiple times.

I can't even update the drivers because my comp doesn't recognize it so it won't show up as an option lol.

Is there a fix for this? And if not, is there an alternative to put files on my MicroSD card?

Thanks so much in advance!

The SD card on the Steam Deck is formatted with the Linux ext4 file system by default. This is a file system Windows doesn't know.

If you are on Windows then maybe WSL could help here because then you are running Linux inside of Windows and that Linux instance will most definitely know this file system.

But if you want to move files to your Steam Deck and both machines are on the same network then I think KDE Connect is a far easier path to take. You can install it from the Ms Store on Windows and it is also available on the Discover Store on the Steam Deck.

One just pair the devices and transfer files that way.

Thanks a lot guys! So to clarify, when I formatted my SD Card on the Steam Deck it formatted it to Linux, so Windows can't recognize it now?

Yes. But if you want to do the things mentioned on the page posted by @Mahjik (using a usb card reader) then it is possible to use Fat32. As Linux supports it. There is a tool called KDE partition manager which let's you do this from desktop mode.

I don't want to do what was on that page, at least not yet, just looking to transfer files from comp to Steam Deck. I got KDE Connect on my comp, but on my steam deck there's no simple "KDE Connect" option to download. I downloaded a different version of it, but can't seem to locate it in my steam deck lol. I'm so new to desktop mode

It should be in your system tray. Little square icon.

Thanks so much man! Got KDE Connect working :) Well, I tried to transfer file and it says "Receiving file (Failed), but this is something I'll troubleshoot with KDE I'm sure.
