Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Steam Deck turned on from sleep mode in case a handful of times the last few days?
I usually leave my deck in sleep mode plugged in and turned around in its case mostly zipped up (so the USB cable can get in)

I took it out of town last week but never even turned it on or took it out of sleep mode.

I put it back on my night stand Sunday where I usually keep it and plugged it back in.

I heard a weird notification sound from somewhere a few times the last few days and didn’t know what it is.

This time I heard that it was coming from the Deck. It had been waking up from sleep mode to a login screen (apparently logged me out too for some reason?) which was the sound I was hearing.

It was obviously on inside the mostly zipped case. Not like excruciatingly hot to the touch or anything. But definitely very warm.

This happened at least a couple times a day I was hearing the sound, so a couple times a day since Sunday.

I’m worried my Deck is now damaged. I feel like an idiot, but I also don’t know how it woke up from sleep mode to begin with.

Are you only using sleep mode, as opposed to shutting off the Deck completely while you are not using it at night?

It's healthier for the device to be shut off completely every once and again, as sleep mode is not really a substitute for that.

From my experience, sleep mode should only be used if you plan to pick up the device after a short break. And only leave your deck in the case while it is *completely* turned off.
Furthermore, it is easier to accidentally resume from sleep mode since you don't need to hold down the power button. That's why a complete shutdown is more reliable when not in use.

Ah ok. I figured sleep mode was “off” enough for it to be okay, I mostly was keeping it in sleep mode so it could still stay updated while functionally being shut down.

Does anyone think my system was damaged from this happening for a few days?

sleep mode, completely suspends all functions while keeping only the current state in memory. nothing else happens during sleep mode.

I agree, you do need to shut down the entire system every so often.

I’ll keep that in mind. Have it shutdown now as a result.

When it's in sleep mode, the only difference is that the running state is frozen and held in memory. The device stays just alive "enough", to maintain that memory state. Other than that, it's essentially off. No hard in using that. I mainly only put my Deck to sleep, but every 3-4 months (typically when an update comes through) I do a full reboot. No issues here. However, I do not put my Deck into it's case unless it's full "OFF".

If the Deck could not get adequate airflow, it could potentially overheat. If the case was open enough to have power running to it, that should be enough to allow it to breathe in that situation.

Hopefully that’s the case, it was definitely like very warm, but not like “super hot to the touch” the way I’ve felt a smartphone overhearing be. So hopefully it’s okay. Seems to run fine.
