Steam Deck
Getting my new steam deck!
Any advice and any recommended games? I'm thinking of running 40hz/40fps at all times.

Vampire survivor and yukuza like a dragon
Mad Max is pretty much solid 60 fps all on high. The best game on steam deck imo.

can i add you two to get more titles :p
I second Vampire Survivors!
Third person games are great on Deck
Shadow of Mordor, Spider-Man, Assassins Creed games, Sleeping Dogs, Mad Max, Arkham games, etc.

I also love my twin-sticks
Synthetik, Nuclear Throne, Neon Chrome, Enter the Gungeon, Nex Machina
Hi-Fi Rush, Portal, the Etrian Odyssey trilogy, Labyrinth of Refrain/Galleria, Cozy Grove, Cristales, Disgaea, A Hat in Time, Graveyard Keeper, Cult of the Lamb, Here comes Niko, Stardew Valley, Ember Knights.

It's a motley mix of dungeon crawlers, 3D platforming collectathons, peaceful life RPGs, roguelites, strategy RPGs, etc.

Do either of you, for the bigger and demanding titles, cap to 40hz or just let the FPS roam free? and if you do, does it feel stuttery / laggy?

If I'm doing an FPS cap, it's generally going to be 30FPS and 60Hz.

However, for most of the games I've listed, it's not necessary at all.

Yea, if you cant maintain 60fps, lock at 30fps/60hz or 40fps/40hz will be much smoother than letting it bounce around.
I play Elden Ring @ 40 Fps & 9 watts on the CPU. runs fine for me w no freezes.

Capping your games creates input lag. I let the steam deck just go full throttle at all times so it doesn’t experience this.

but what about capping the refresh rate to 40hz and then using ingame vsync to cap the FPS? I know capping the games FPS through the menu causes input lag but never heard of refresh rate causing it

Thank you I’ll keep that noted :) games I definitely wanna play are all the resident evils, Fallout 3 4 NV 76, Cyberpunk, Elden Ring. Just any games really that I cba to play at my desk xd
All the Fallout games, Doom games and Yakuza games work well from my experience. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1/2 (the originals) work great. Far Cry 3 also works well. C&C collection too. It's amazing how much options there are, especially if you use the track pad more than the right stick, which I do. That's my biggest recommendation, the right pad. Use it a lot. It's a great improvement over a stick.

You could try out the games you the same way you would normally try on a PC. I don't really know what type of games you enjoy but what I can tell is that Steam Deck can handle a large variety of games.

If you are concerned if the games work on the Deck then based on my experience I'd say a vast majority works. Some titles may have some issues, and at the time of posting this comment I've noticed some kind of problems (from not launching at all or crashing in-game to weird display issues with default settings etc.) in about 15 titles after trying out easily over 100 games.

According to Steam roughly around 530 games in my Library are Playable or Verified (out of 989 games), and about 230 of those are verified. However, I've tried out various titles that have been listed as Unknown or even Unsupported, and in many cases those work just as well.
I try to exercise some level of caution when buying games that are listed as Unsupported but for the most part I'm not too much worried when buying Verified, Playable or Unknown ranked games with the intention of playing them on the Deck. On the other hand, if I've already bought a game then I see no harm in downloading and trying out even Unsupported titles.

All that aside, here are some suggestions for games that all are listed as Deck Verified and are either highly positively reviewed or I've tried out them myself:
Baba Is You, Celeste, Cult of the Lamb, Cuphead, Dead Cells, Ender Lilies, Enter the Gungeon, Hades, Hogwarts Legacy, Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition, Persona 4 Golden, Pizza Tower, Rabi-Ribi, Rogue Legacy 2, Super Meat Boy, Vampire Survivors, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana.

For the titles that are ranked as Playable, I'd recommend paying attention to the details what makes the game playable. In some cases the issues are not always a big deal.
