Cannot reimage the deck

I've replaced the SSD of the Steam Deck, it boots correctly, but there's no OS since it's a new SSD, so I tried re-imaging it, first with the recovery tool burned onto a thumb drive and then connected via a USB hub (which previously worked with all other devices), the thumb drive has a read/write LED on it, but it didn't blink at all and the boot menu didn't recognize it, which is odd and seems wrong
Then I tried using a 64 GB SD card, and the boot menu recognizes it, but then it's stuck on an indefinite Steam Deck logo, I waited hours and it didn't change
What am I doing wrong? I've heard that I should try an SDHC card instead of SDXC, or that I should try a USB-C adapter instead of a hub, is this true?

the steam logo can stay for up to an hour, but you should use a USB3 drive or even a USB HDD or SSD
