Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Issues with Steam Deck not fully connecting to external monitor
Before getting the special dock for my Steam Deck, I decided to buy this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07L882KQW
- to connect my new Steam deck to one of my existing monitors so I could use desktop mode in 1080p.

I connected this cable to my Steam Deck, and the other end (HDMI) to my main monitor, and also unplugged the existing cables from my main monitor so it would only get a signal from the Steam deck.
On the Steam Deck, it displayed a "new monitor prompt" where it asks about how you want to use the new display (extend, duplicate, etc). And in the display settings, my other monitor does show up, showing the resolution and the name of the actual monitor. So it is successfully connecting, and getting some info about the monitor.

But even though it seems to make some sort of connection, my monitor will continue to say "no signal". Even if I manually tell it to switch to the port that the cable is connected to. It persists in saying "HDMI 1 No Signal" even though it is clearly connected, and the Steam Deck even acknowledges that it connects.

I also tried connecting to my second monitor which has 2 HDMI ports. And it does the same thing with both ports. Steam Deck will detect the monitor, but the monitor fails to get a signal, apparently. Which makes no sense to me because it's clearly transmitting data.

My guess is that it's a setting I have to change on the Steam Deck, hoping that it's not the cable itself, because it's brand new and has a lot of positive reviews.

I would guess it's your USBC dock or adapter

Well right now It's just a cable, no dock.

Pretty sure you need the dock, that’s why the dock was made, to connect the deck to a monitor, other wise buy a dock, except for power issues. I can plug my Nreal into the deck, but I can’t plug my monitors direct…

I got this cable for my laptop and monitor: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08C2PVP7J?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1
I tried it on the steam deck and it worked fine. Looking at what the cable is it seems fine. My monitor can support USB C and Display port. Maybe thats why it works for me. I don't know though, I'm literally just making that up.

I tried a different but similar usb-c to Display port adapter and it worked fine for me

that link is for HDMI to microHDMI cable, are you sure it's the right one?

Kinda strange. I swear I remember watching a video where either the person said that you could just plug in a USB-C to HDMI cable without the entire hub, or something, idk.

You definitely do not need a dock. Did you buy the 3 meter variant? It's possible that at such lengths this cable is simply too crappy. You need to find another device which supports DP Alt mode on the USB-C port to test the cable.
