Kingston 512gb microSD card bricked after Steam OS Beta Update
I had my second Kingston 512gb microSD bricked today.

Unlike most cases I've read, both of my cards were bricked during reboot after updating the Steam Deck OS to Beta.

The first card was being used on my Switch OLED for years, and it worked fine on Deck for a month. One day, after updating to Beta, Steam Deck just stopped recognizing my SD.

I thought it was a faulty card and bought another one, that's what I've been using since November.

The first thing I did was do the authenticity test and it passed.

It was working fine until yesterday, I installed and uninstalled games frequently on it and no problems.

Then I decided to leave OS Stable for OS Beta again, when I restarted after the update it no longer recognized my card...

I took the card and put it on my Windows Desktop and nothing, it simply isn't recognized as if nothing was plugged into the computer.

I'm honestly leaning towards not using SD cards in the Deck anymore, I'm tired of losing progress in games that don't have cloud saves and spending so much money on expensive high speed cards for them to simply be randomly murdered by the Deck

Just had my second 1TB SD card in my steam deck, 1st was a SanDisk ultra, now my Kingston card died. Both were legit cards.
My StamDeck killed two pieces of Kingston Canvas Select Plus 512gb SD card during software upgrade.
Now before I start upgrade, I turn off SteamDeck, pull out SD card, turn on SteamDeck, start update, turn off SteamDeck, insert SD card and turn on SteamDeck.
Works fine since I use this "method".
A second Kingston Canvas Select Plus 512gb SD card just died for me in the Steam Deck. The first card died after 1,5 month of use (about 1-2 h on average per day) and the other one after only one month of use. Bought it from a respected computer store in Finland straight off the shelf and got the second one on warranty upon returning the broken one. Will definitely not use another Canvas Select Plus card with my Steam Deck. Not sure if it has something to do with that the speed specifications are not quite enough for the Steam Deck, so the Deck probably runs it at maximum transfer rate all the time. Perhaps a card that is overspecificed for the Deck would survive longer, as it would never be running at its maximum transfer rate on the Deck. According to most sites the Steam Deck's micro-SD reader tops out at 100MB/s.
I just bought a Kingston 512gb card and it won't format so I can't use it. Steamos shows there's a card in it though

Do you get an error when trying to format it?

I did but I don't remember exactly what it said

I rebooted my Steam Deck and tried formatting it again, and it worked this time. Hopefully it stays that way

Same as me, my Steam Deck broke two Canvas Select Plus 512GB. One was updating the system and the other one was by trying to launch a new game not from Steam.
As I lost two SD cards I'm performing an SSD upgrade and decided to not use a micro SD maybe just for games that I try or I don't care losing anything.

I've tried many advanced things to try to restore the micro SD but it's just so bricked that I can't barely try anything to revive my SD card.

If someone is about to buy a micro SD card for the Steam Deck I don't recommend Kingston, just tried the Canvas Select Plus, but I wouldn't try the other models from the same brand on the Steam Deck.

Right now I'm doing low level formatting and seeing if I can achieve something. If I achieve to unbrick the micro SD I will update this message.
And my Kingston Canvas Select Plus V30 A1 512GB just died.
Anyone tried the Kingston's A2 model: Canvas Go! Plus?

My damaged card is not being read by any device. It looks like I haven't inserted a card.

Any tips?

Kingston’s Canvas Select Plus microSD is compatible with Android devices and designed with A1 rated performance. It offers improved speed and capacity for loading apps faster and capturing images and videos in multiple capacities up to 512GB1. Powerful in performance, speed, and durability, the Canvas Select Plus microSD is designed for reliability when shooting and developing high-resolution photos or filming and editing full HD videos. Kingston Canvas cards are tested to be durable in the harshest environments and conditions so you can take them anywhere with confidence that your photos, videos, and files will be protected. Available with a lifetime warranty.

Optimized for high-resolution photos filming and editing full HD videos.......

Kingston pretty much admitted these SD cards stink and cannot survive normal OS workloads. Video, images etc require performance but rather low write environments. SteamOS and other gaming applications needs storage which can survive databases.

And another Kingston Canvas Select Plus 512Gb dead. (Oficial ones from Kingston Store).
I'm using SteamOS 3.5 (Preview Channel)
I always make the internal storage to Default one.
I not use the microSD to storage Games, only Mame Roms (only 340GB)

I wish I read about this earlier. Experienced exactly the same chain of events. Next trying out Canvas Go Plus, which seems to be recommended by Kingston[www.kingston.com] for Steam Deck use.
Came to check after an SD card had died if SteamOS could forget a drive/library only to find this thread close to the front page.
As I've not had need for a bigger drive than 128GB in the past I only had smaller drives to repurpose so I bought a 512 GB Canvas select plus directly from Amazon EU (so should be authentic) last week to act as a stop gap until I could install a bigger SSD. Kingston were reliable in the mid-2000's and early 10's so I gave them a go over Sandisk or Samsung.

Less than 1 week later, with <10 games installed and <4h playtime the card has died a truly terrible death and a several year old sandisk card & samsung are plugging the gap until another card can be delivered later this week. Needless to say Kingston or at least their entry level cards have entered the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ alongside PNY to be avoided for now and will continue to be avoided when the time comes to reach into 1TB and beyond.

Posting here merely to record the rapid failure of the same card.
