Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Just snapped my SD card in half
If you're planning on doing a lot of mods to your Steam Deck, I would just leave your SD card out of the Deck entirely until you're done tinkering. It's extremely easy to forget and snap your card in half when opening the back panel.

Another victim to the club..... I ended up having to RMA mine due to unable to remove the decapitated card from the slot, fortunately Valve didn't charge me repair fee for that.

Yeah, I almost couldn't get it out. I had to get a toothpick and stick it in there. Hopefully the Steam Deck 2 fixes this issue. I'm glad I didn't buy the most expensive SD card out there. Silicon Power sells decent SD cards on Amazon.

What were you trying to mod exactly with the steam deck
I wasn't even trying to mod anything when I broke it. My Steam Deck started overheating when it was on the docking station and I was installing EmuDeck. I opened it just to make sure all the screws were tightened enough on the heat shield because I had just installed a 1 TB NVME drive the other day. It was a 2230 NVME though, not a 2242. Installing a 2242 in the Steam Deck is a bad idea btw.

Not only a 2242 SSD is bad on SD, in fact, even for 2230 replacement, folks really should look deeper into the specifications (to be specific, the power consumption) of the model. Some 2230 SSD runs hotter, which draw more battery (= shorter play time), and also avoid those with doubled sided components (mostly seen on 2TB models) as they are thicker.

Yeah, it was really weird that my Steam Deck started overheating just docking it and installing emulators. The next time I dock it, I'm definitely taking off the rubber case I have on it. I'm going to see how the battery life compares to how it was before modded.

I never noticed any battery difference when I installed a SSD. The SSD I used was also using twice the amps as the original drive at 3.3v 2.5a

In theory it could use more power but it probably never will as my internet or games will never push it to its 3500/mb sec read and write.

I’ve had it installed now for 8 months

Yeah, I haven't noticed any difference in gaming battery life since I modded it. It did overheat once, but it was also on a third party docking station with a rubberized case.

While it is not a design flaw, a reminder sticker near the screws on the back "REMOVE SD CARD BEFORE DISASSEMBLY" will prevent a lot of user error and RMA tickets. And to be fair, there are a lot of devices that do not require removal of the sdcard when disassembly, it doesn't hurt to inform users to avoid some unnecessary "careless" mistakes.

You'd think removing the card would be the first thing you do. Even then, there's an obsession with tinkering with the insides of the Deck that I don't understand. Lots of unnecessary fiddling.

NO U 😛
I encourage people modding the Deck to tape a reminder piece of paper on the back panel to prevent snapping your SD card in half.
