Steam Deck

Steam Deck

DO NOT use Frostsheet (graphene thermal pad)
Quick story short, I changed the thermal paste for one of those thin graphene thermal pads.
I almost killed my Steam Deck because of it.

So please, DO NOT use graphene thermal pads as they're TOO THIN and you'll find all sorts of plobems between surprising cold fan air (🤔) to potentially overheating and killing your CPU.

Not a fun way to "protect" your Steam Deck. Temperatures should range from 80 to 85 degrees celsius, while having the GPU at 1600 MHz and 99% usage.

Just good old thermal paste guys...

Even majority of consoles need to be kept clean every 3 to 6 months and reapplication of thermal paste on console every 1 to 2 years. To prevent dust and hair buildup if you have animals. Not cleaning can cause house fires and console burnouts and hardware failure.

Sounds like complete paranoia to me. If you actually dust and hoover regularly, you shouldn't be having that sort of problem.

All this seems like unnecessary tinkering. Also, judging by how many comments I've read that say they've ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up their deck from such work. Makes me wonder why people bother.

I would like to mention I'm rather inexperienced in thermal paste knowledge.

Bruh

I agree with the keeping your stuff clean, but the thermal paste re-apply thing is complete bollocks.

I'm super late to this conversation but isn't there a risk of the thermal paste leaking and damaging the surrounding hardware due to the mobility? I would like to mention I'm rather inexperienced in thermal paste knowledge. If this comment seems ignorant of such knowledge I applogize but please let me know if there is a risk or not
Thermal paste won't damage surrounding areas if it leaks as long it does not contain any metallic in the paste. If it does then it can shorten other components on the steam deck motherboard. While non metallic thermal paste would just grease area up and make it look dirty. So then you can just clean it up and it will be fine afterwards.

reapplication of thermal paste on console every 1 to 2 years.
Thermal paste reapplication is only required if the TIM prevents the cooler from keeping the hardware at a safe tempterature, either from age (which most TIMs used in consoles and prebuilt PCs is designed to do so for far more than 2 years) or from a suboptimal choice of TIM (which will generally present an issue out the gate, like Apple’s older x86 machines).

not sure if people still check on this but i have been using a graphite pad from frost sheet for well over a year and have had no issues at all. systems shows my temps lower then using the thermal paste that came with the steam deck and im not playing older games all the times, cyberpunk, resident evils, prey, armored core, dark souls you name it i've been playing it since i got it a year+ ago. i haven't noticed or had any issues since i applied the pad.

Nothing has happened yet. all the modifications I've made I will eventually need to reply paste so for now I'm just looking as much knowledge as possible before I need to do something about it. doesn't hurt to look into possibilities
The thing is, there aren't any possibilities because Valve treats the Steam Deck as it is, a CONSOLE and NOT A PC. So you can't modify ANYTHING. Not the SSD, not the thermal paste, not even the BIOS.

I had to learn this in a bad way, so I post it here to warn some users.

Are you high? Steam Deck is modular by design. I replaced my SSD and Valve still RMA'd it when I needed.

Industrial grade thermal pad!! Nice.
Works better than any Frostsheet and way safer to apply.

Can't go wrong with that one. Use that instead if you don't like good old thermal paste.

Im using graphene for my 5600 CPU and A750 GPU and it work great

Maybe not on steam deck, but on regular computer its better than many thermal paste
