And as time goes by, it only gets worse.
Counterpoint: Its fantastic, and being able to play my (large) backlog of games and sit on the sofa is great. (Never mind play in bed, quickly sleeping the deck)
My normal computer is a M1 MacBook Air, so with the Deck I have access to many things I couldn't previously catch up on (my gaming PC is 1100km away being used by my kids). My only regret is not getting one sooner (only had it a month of so)
Plus some stuff plays better with controller, playing with my laptop on my lap, with a controller in hand just feels weird.
Overall the worst things about it for me were the tiny screen size and lack of game compatibility for such a high price; that is what got me to refund it. The compatibility issue is down to using linux based (proton); if Valve had been a bit less greedy they could have taken a hit on a percentage of their already inflated MSRP for the steam deck and worked with Microsoft on putting windows on it....this would have killed all the compatibility issues in one blow.
With all those downsides I'd rather just use my M11X laptop which cost me less and has 0 compatibility issues.
Greedy? Valve does have 0 political ability to change Windows. Windows is Microsoft's platform. Valve does not have the ability to ask Microsoft to mod Windows in such a way to allow Valve to start custom DE etc. Valve's Linux investment is born out of frustration of innovation between OS and IHV.
Steam deck has nothing to do with greed. Valve wants freedom like the Linux community.
It always amuses me when people compared the Deck to a laptop.
Well. The common theme with Steam Deck critics is Valve have control over multiple companies with combine market cap of 10 trillion+ and you can ignore engineering sacrifices.
1. You can see what games you have that are compatible on the Store Page;
2. The specs/ screen size are... on the Store Page; and
3. You can see it's not a gaming laptop, but a Steam Deck...on the Store Page.
For everything else...YouTube DOES exist...You can see benchmarks, recommended settings, and nearly every single review discusses battery life.
There are plenty of games (modern ones, in fact) that run from extremely playable to great on the Deck. Is it going to outperform your full gaming rig? Probably not, but why would you expect it to?
Personally, I am amazed that I can enjoy Cyberpunk2077 on this thing at mixed settings (some of which are medium and high) and stay above 30 FPS. How many far less demanding games dip into the teens and low 20s on a Switch? Lies of P dropped this month and can hit 60.
If you are having trouble with controls, then just like on PC, there are are controller profiles for most games in the Steam store.
I think your opinions are valid, but they're factors that someone would apply prior to making a purchase, and that's where the negative responses are coming from.
The Deck isn't a competitor to a game laptop. That's why it amuses me when people compare them.
It shows me they don't know what the Deck is.
