The steam deck screen needs to stay ON while downloading a large size game
Dear Deck Team, can you kindly provide an update for the steam deck for the issue when trying to download a large size game (50 plus GB) , the steam deck screen needs to stay ON while downloading the game, in the settings i only found the option to dim the screen after certain minutes of time, but there is no option to make the steam deck screen go OFF compleletly when downloading a large size game, thanks

Switch to desktop mode and you can make the screen turn off.

I just plug mine into my dock without the dock connected screen off or on a different input.

That’s not what he’s talking about. If your downloading a game that is 50 gig or more, the Steam Deck will go into sleep mode while the game is downloading. I don’t know for sure, but I think the download will stop when the Steam Deck is in sleep mode.

If the Deck is downloading in Game Mode, it will not sleep until the download is completed. What imbrock is suggesting is to connect to an external monitor in Game Mode which disables the Steam Deck screen (it don't support multiple monitors in Game Mode at least at the time of this post). Then just shut the external screen off. With that, no screen will be on the Deck will complete the download.

The option that you’re wanting is already on the Steam Deck, and has been for a while.

Here’s how to do it. Go to settings then down to display. Scroll down till you see “DIM DISPLAY.” Below that you will see “PUT DECK TO SLEEP.” There you can click on “Disabled” from the drop down menu and it will prevent your Steam Deck from turning off. You will have to enable it again if you want your Steam Deck to turn off automatically at a set time.

There are four options total. You don’t need to disable anything under “DIM DISPLAY.” You only need to disable the two options under “PUT DECK TO SLEEP.” Your Steam Deck will still dim the display, but it won’t turn it off preventing your download from being disrupted.

I’ve had my Steam Deck go into sleep mode while downloading a game and it stopped the download.

In Game Mode? In Desktop mode, it will do that, but I've never had it go to sleep when downloading a game overnight in Game Mode. I use a microfiber towel and just cover the screen when it's downloading and never had it not have the downloads finished when waking it up in the morning.

I only play and download games in game mode. This was like several months ago when it happened. I haven’t downloaded a large file size recently to see if it would happen again.

thanks ,will try the workaround that Mahjik and Canadian Gamer are suggesting, but hopefully the deck team can release an update to overcome this issue

It's not ideal, but for me a microfiber towel over the screen for the few times I download overnight is a small inconvenience for the fun it brings me. :steamhappy:

FWIW, there are already several requests for this in the Feature Request section.

Yeah I've had mine do it in game mode as well. Screen goes black and I wake up to a download that barely started.

I'd like to also add deck playability to more games. This thing has been out for almost 2 years and only like a 5th of steam games can be played on it. And even in that it's really confusing. Some games that say unsupported work good and show deck buttons. Some games that say playable are completely unplayable. It's rather frustrating just guessing at what's going to work.
